Maurices to open store at mall

The women's fashion retailer Maurices will open a store near Dillard's Women in the Hamilton Place mall this summer.

Maurices, which operates 800 stores in 44 states, bills itself as a leading specialty store and "authority for the savvy, fashion-conscious customer with a twenty-something attitude."

Maurices will occupy a 4,800-square-foot space located on the upper level of the mall.

"We are excited to add Maurices, a retailer that will further enhance the tenant mix and offer our shoppers yet another option for affordable, fashion forward shopping," Hamilton Place General Manager Dan Wolfe said in a statement Tuesday.

Labor response team eliminated

Tennessee is shutting down a rapid response team that has been sent to aid workers in mass layoffs.

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development is eliminating the unit despite the objections of some members of a state workforce advisory board.

The team, which is federally funded and operated for the past decade, has helped when at least 50 people have been thrown out of work by an employer's decision.

Jeff Hentschel, a spokesman for the labor department, said some of the seven members of the team have been given layoff notices and the others would be told shortly. All of the team will be laid off by June 18.
