Other than serving as a temporary movie set last summer, Engel Stadium hasn’t hosted anything other than baseball in almost a decade.

It’s been longer than that since Charlie Daniels and longtime local favorites Overland played there together, so a concert featuring the two tonight, May 2, is a rare event. And it’s for a good cause.

The historic venue served as a backdrop for the baseball scenes in the movie “42,” now in theaters nationwide. While some renovation work was done for the filming, there is still plenty to do.

Tonight’s concert will benefit both the stadium, overseen by the Engel Stadium Foundation, as well as the Veterans Entrepreneurship Program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga College of Business.

Friends of the Festival is organizing the concert in conjunction with the Armed Forces Day parade downtown on Friday, May 3.

Daniels is best known for the hits “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” “The South’s Gonna Do It Again” and “Long Haired Country Boy.”

The Veterans Entrepreneurship Program is designed to help members of the armed forces enter or re-enter higher education. The curriculum involves entrepreneurship and small business management and is formatted in a series of training modules.

Tickets are $20 at more than 50 area Kangaroo locations.
