Day top overall at Carson-Newman

Carson-Newman University center Kevin Day from Soddy-Daisy High School followed up a host of honors from his senior football season by being named the school's overall male athlete of the year. Softball slugger Brittany Hefner was the top female athlete. Day, who graduated in December and now teaches social studies at West High School in Knoxville, was a consensus All-American for NCAA Division II as well as the South Atlantic Conference's Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner. Catcher Bri Shoemake from Ooltewah was the softball "best defense" honoree.

Baseball

• After handily winning the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season championship, 2012 NAIA champion Tennessee Wesleyan dominated the league's top baseball awards for 2013. TWC senior first baseman Jake Stone was player of the year, junior teammate Jarrod Jameson was pitcher of the year and the Bulldogs' Billy Berry was coach of the year. Stone earned his honor for a .375 batting average with 11 home runs, 19 doubles, a triple and 49 RBIs, while Jameson went 12-0 with a 2.61 earned run average. Bryan's Cody Rhinehart from Ooltewah was freshman of the year. Bryan's Tyler Latham and Grant Zawadzki joined Stone, Wesleyan outfielder Trey Griffin and TWC pitchers Jameson, Noah Piard and Corey Rhoney on the all-conference team, and Bryan's Chris Jeffries and Joey Underwood and TWC's Zach Fleshman and Wes Minton made the Gold Glove team. Seventh-seeded Bryan (30-25) stayed alive in the AAC tournament at Kingsport, Tenn., by beating third seed St. Andrews 5-2 on Wednesday, and top-seeded Wesleyan (41-15) stayed unbeaten in the tourney with a 4-2 defeat of Reinhardt. A Josh Harris grand slam highlighted the Lions' five-run third inning; he went 2-for-5 while Kenny Knudsen allowed five hits and one earned run in six innings and Joey Vega got the save.

Tennis

• The league-champion Sewanee women's tennis team claimed all three major Southern Athletic Association awards for the season, with Bronte Goodhue from Girls Preparatory School named player of the year, freshman Lindsey Liles voted newcomer of the year and Conchie Shackelford honored as coach of the year. Her husband, John Shackelford, was the men's coach of the year, and the Tigers' Connor Winkler was newcomer of the year and made the All-SAA first team. Sewanee senior Levi Joy and freshman Eric Roddy from Baylor received honorable mention. Goodhue, Liles and Liles' senior sister Jenny were women's first-teamers with Annie Veron making the second team.

Softball

• Tennessee Temple lost 7-3 to Ohio Christian but beat area rival Covenant College 7-1 in the National Christian College Athletic Association Mid-East softball region tournament Wednesday at Jackson, Tenn. The second-year Lady Crusaders play Ohio Christian again at 11 a.m. CDT today with the winner having to beat top-seeded host Union University twice for the championship. Union beat Covenant 9-0 in five innings in the first game. Temple's Raven Pope and Covenant's Jenni Jobe were all-region selections for the season. Jobe was 3-for-4 with a double against Temple, when teammate Madison Quirk was 2-for-2 with a double and Courtney Wagoner went 2-for-4. For Temple (25-18), Amanda Rector was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Pope was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Autrell Brazzle was 2-for-3 and Ashlen Mitchell and pitcher Carley Daniel each was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Haley Huskey scored twice. Pope tripled and batted in two runs against Ohio Christian, and Heather Smith was 2-for-3 and scored a run. While two teammates were 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs each, catcher Reagan Schrader from Grace Academy was 1-for-3 for Union (23-20) against Covenant, which got a lone hit from GPS graduate Morgan Lane, who was 1-for-2. Schrader did not play in Union's 5-0 win over Ohio Christian.

• Senior shortstop Laura Curtis from Chattanooga Christian and Chattanooga State homered in each game as Memphis twice won 5-4 in softball Wednesday at Murray State. She gave the Tigers (24-35) a 5-1 lead in the first game and tied the second game at 1.

Soccer

• The Chattanooga Football Club is headed to Greensboro, N.C., for its first-round matchup in the U.S. Open Cup. U.S. Soccer released the first-round pairings Wednesday and Chattanooga FC will face the Carolina Dynamo, a Premier Development League squad, on May 14 at Macpherson Stadium. CFC, which starts its fifth season on May 11, was hoping to host its Cup opener. The amateur club from the National Premier Soccer League hosted and won a Cup qualifier in 2011.
