The seventh annual Dragon Boat Festival to benefit the Children's Hospital Foundation is Saturday, May 4, at TVA Park at Chickamauga Dam, 3001 Kings Point Road, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Spectators will find vendors, live entertainment from Solar Moonshine from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a kids play area. There is no admission charge.

Dragon boat racing dates back thousands of years. This year, 52 teams are competing, according to Ali Cobb with Children's Hospital at Erlanger. Corporate and community teams race in authentic 46-foot Hong Kong style boats. Teams comprise 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerer.

The teams will compete during two heats, and then 12 teams will race in the finals beginning at 2:30 p.m.

All funds raised at this event will go to Children's Hospital Foundation. The goal is to top the $165,000 mark.

Cobb said some of the teams will conduct fundraising efforts during the day, "so people are encouraged to bring cash."
