BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Birmingham police said two people died in a collision between a car and an Amtrak train.

Police Sgt. Vincent Green said the collision occurred about 12:30 p.m. Sunday at a train crossing at the intersection of Harrison Avenue and 17th Way Southeast. The names of the victims in the car were not immediately released.

Amtrak spokesman Craig Schulz said the train was traveling from New York and New Orleans, and none of the 83 passengers nor any of the crew were injured. The train, called the Crescent, was delayed for several hours. The accident also delayed the northbound Crescent traveling from New Orleans to New York because investigators closed the tracks, Schulz said.

The accident occurred two days after a collision between a car and an Amtrak train killed three people in Toccoa, Ga.
