Volkswagen investment a huge benefit to Chattanooga and other letters to the editors

Volkswagen investment a huge benefit to Chattanooga

After reading the editorial about VW layoffs, I want to be sure all the facts are accurately represented.

1) Even after the recent laysoff of temporary plant workers, Volkswagen will employ 2,700 people. The auto suppliers we recruited without incentives employ more than 1,300 more. That's 4,000-plus new jobs -- more than twice Volkswagen's original commitment.

2) Volkswagen received training resources to train local people to do the new jobs, a former brownfield which they transformed into the world's greenest manufacturing facility, a property tax deferral which costs taxpayers nothing, and infrastructure/land prep to make the site functional.

3) Volkswagen's payroll and purchasing drive more than $50 million in state and local tax revenue each year.

4) Volkswagen pays local school taxes.

5) Volkswagen and its suppliers pay hundreds of millions in payroll each year which workers spend locally to the benefit of all. In short, Volkswagen risked $1 billion investing in a community that had never built a car.

State and local governments partnered with Volkswagen through incentives to ensure the project succeeded and citizens benefited. Volkswagen could have easily located in a competitor city. Instead, it chose Chattanooga, and we're enjoying incredible returns on our investment.

United States needs to keep Muslims out

Recent events are a wakeup call for America to end Muslim immigration.

The Iranian revolution was as far-reaching as the Russian and French Revolution combined.

When the U.S. and England did not support Sweden after the Muslim attack, it was a grave failure on the part of the West. America should learn from Europe and its failure to act. France will be Muslim in less than 50 years by out-birthing. There are 60 Muslim enclaves around Paris, where no French man enters.

America needs to close all Islamic schools. America needs to end Muslim students attending U.S. colleges. Harvard and Yale alone have accepted $10 million in grants from Islam.

Hamas calls for the destruction of the Rotary Club and the Lions Club. There are over 30 Hamas chapters in America in places like Raleigh and Kansas City. There are Islamic terrorist already in America, and our borders are not protected.

McCoy cartoon shows lack of knowledge

I was very upset when I saw Glenn McCoy's editorial cartoon on May 8. As a pharmacist, I take my profession very seriously. Not only did Mr. McCoy portray a pharmacist as uncaring and lacking any empathy for the situation, but he also made himself and the Free Press editorial page look quite foolish by implying Plan B is an abortion pill. I encourage both of you to do a little research before you publish such incorrect information.

Mr. Ezell, I hate to break this to you, but the right-side of this paper and the right-wing hate machine in this country, is not bound by facts or reason on any subject.

RON HARR, President & CEO Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce

Reply: RON HARR, After reading an article in the CTFP which was discussing the opposition of politicians and the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce to the possibility of VW and any other company becoming Unionized.
This is the letter I wrote to the CTFP Editor. Do not know if you have read the letter, but here it is.

"After the TN tax payers supplied all of the subsidies and the incentives for helping the manufacturing companies associated with VW and Wacker, to locate in this area for creating jobs? Why are the County politicians, our US Senator(s) and the Chamber of Commerce interfering in trying to influence the contracts made between these companies and their workers? Why do the Republicans not want the US workers to get the best wages and benefits possible?"

The re-creation of private sector jobs here in the USA are certainly needed to produce the goods that are now being imported by the global corporate monopolies. This Republic cannot be sustained with the Gridlock AND with the unsustainable $42 to $46 Billion dollar TRADE DEFICIT PER MONTH, created by the US consumers with the global corporations. How many American Jobs can be related to $42 to $46 billion dollars?

The KEY to recovery is the creation of middle class manufacturing jobs and the decrease in the cost of living expenses while decreasing the "wage gap," with sacrifices made by everybody. Not the depressing of the middle classes and not forcing an increase in the number of people living in Poverty. Remember what the conditions of this Republic were at the end of the last administration with the help of the fraud occurring in the private financial systems and with the effects of the global economy. We were on the verge of another great depression. Was it the private enterprise systems that prevented another great depression?

There has again been a lot of Union bashing against the US workers having representation on their jobs. Has anybody ever heard of or been aware of the need for the growth of the middle class tax base during and after WWII until the global economy grew to an unsustainable record trade deficit? Does it MAKE any difference to make a NOTE THAT while the middle class were growing, so were the upper income people? Did the US dcompanies get a TAX WRITE OFF whem they were investing their billions of dollars into the plants outside the US?

What would the entire situation/conditions be if the Republicans were in control in all of the States and on the National level? Are the voters listening to what the Republicans are telling them? The out come of Mid term Elections in 2014 will be be another "mile stone" indication of whether the voters want to :"MOVE FORWARD," KEEP IN THIS STALEMATE, OR MOVE BACKWARD toward/INTO another GREAT DEPRESSION.
