The Cover-Up

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Keep spinning because he is losing ground by the minute and its not just Fox News anymore.

The town is turning on President Obama – and this is very bad news for this White House.

Republicans have waited five years for the moment to put the screws to Obama – and they have one-third of all congressional committees on the case now. Establishment Democrats, never big fans of this president to begin with, are starting to speak out. And reporters are tripping over themselves to condemn lies, bullying and shadiness in the Obama administration.

Obama’s aloof mien and holier-than-thou rhetoric have left him with little reservoir of good will, even among Democrats. And the press, after years of being accused of being soft on Obama while being berated by West Wing aides on matters big and small, now has every incentive to be as ruthless as can be.

This White House’s instinctive petulance, arrogance and defensiveness have all worked together to isolate Obama at a time when he most needs a support system. “It feel like they don’t know what they’re here to do,” a former senior Obama administration official said. “When there’s no narrative, stuff like this consumes you.”

Republican outrage is predictable, maybe even manageable. Democratic outrage is not.

The dam of solid Democratic solidarity has collapsed, starting with New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd’s weekend scolding of the White House over Benghazi, then gushing with the news the Justice Department had sucked-up an absurdly broad swath of Associated Press phone records.

Lois Lerner, the senior IRS official at the center of the decision to target tea party groups for burdensome tax scrutiny, signed paperwork granting tax-exempt status to the Barack H. Obama Foundation, a shady charity headed by the president’s half-brother that operated illegally for years.

According to the organization’s filings, Lerner approved the foundation’s tax status within a month of filing, an unprecedented timeline that stands in stark contrast to conservative organizations that have been waiting for more than three years, in some cases, for approval.

Lerner also appears to have broken with the norms of tax-exemption approval by granting retroactive tax-exempt status to Malik Obama’s organization.

The following questions, though somewhat loaded, do deserve answers. Perhaps alprova and nucanuck will oblige.

Why'd he hide the birth certificate? (Probably to stir up trouble.) Why's he still hiding his school records? To hide low grades or claims of Kenyan birth?

Re Benghazi, do we yet know who refused the added security the ambassador had asked for? Do we yet know what the President was told about the attack while it was in progress, and where he was and what he was doing all the time it was proceeding? Could the military have done anything if ordered to try something--sent in F-18s to strafe, perhaps? Why was the attack blamed on a lousy, unseen movie? Is the jailing of the movie's maker politically motivated? Was K'daffy's government safer than the current one? Is Egypt's new government more peaceable and better on civil rights for minorities than Mubarak's government? Is Syria likely to improve in those regards if the current rebels take power? Do/did any of those places need regime change as badly as North Korea does?

Did IRS people lie to Congress, denying targeting of Tea people although they knew of such targeting?

For perspective, how many people died in Watergate?

Every other network is reporting that the e-mails delivered to Congress pretty much exonerate the White House from all but one talking point, which was to change the name of the diplomatic embassy to that of a "compound," yet Fox News, God love 'em, is still banging the pot that the State Department was responsible for changing the talking points.

So, about a third of the country, who hangs on Fox New's every word, is still misinformed and believes what Fox News delivers.

They really ought to be ashamed to call themselves a new network and they are hardly fair and balanced.

Hopefully, people will take the time to read those publicly released e-mails for themselves to learn the truth, but I won't hold my breath that many of their viewers will.

For some, it is so much easier for them to believe the misrepresentations offered by Fox.

The progressive-leaning investigative journalism group ProPublica says the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) office that targeted and harassed conservative tax-exempt groups during the 2012 election cycle gave the progressive group nine confidential applications of conservative groups whose tax-exempt status was pending.

ProPublica says the documents the IRS gave them were “not supposed to be made public”:

The same IRS office that deliberately targeted conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status in the run-up to the 2012 election released nine pending confidential applications of conservative groups to ProPublica late last year.

The group says that "no unapproved applications from liberal groups were sent to ProPublica.”

AndrewLohr wrote: "Why'd he hide the birth certificate?"

He released the copy of his Certification of Live Birth in June of 2008. This is what anyone receives when birth records are requested in most states.

When that did not satisfy some, in April of 2011, he requested of Hawaiian officials a copy of his long form birth certificate, which was certified by State officials.

"Why's he still hiding his school records?"

Because he is not obligated under any criteria to provide them to the public. Those are none of anyone's business, if he chooses to keep them private.

"Re Benghazi, do we yet know who refused the added security the ambassador had asked for?"

That's the question of the century, isn't it? Eight months, and that question has not been answered, perhaps because no one refused additional security.

"Do we yet know what the President was told about the attack while it was in progress, and where he was and what he was doing all the time it was proceeding?"

No and that information is not necessarily information that the public is privy to knowing. Darrell Issa stated yesterday that the President is not the target of this investigation.

"Could the military have done anything if ordered to try something--sent in F-18s to strafe, perhaps?"

According to Leon Panetta, No. The plane that was being prepared to be sent into the area was not given air clearance to fly into Libya.

"Why was the attack blamed on a lousy, unseen movie?"

Because there were several protests at US diplomatic facilities in several countries over that movie. Intelligence was, at the time, that the attacks were spawned by yet another protest.

"Is the jailing of the movie's maker politically motivated?"

No. He was jailed for violating the terms of his parole on another, unrelated criminal conviction. He was not supposed to be accessing the Internet for any reason.

"Was K'daffy's government safer than the current one?"

Not at all.

"Is Egypt's new government more peaceable and better on civil rights for minorities than Mubarak's government?"

The jury is still out on that one.

"Is Syria likely to improve in those regards if the current rebels take power?"

Our nation's leaders think so.

"Do/did any of those places need regime change as badly as North Korea does?"

Yes, without question.

"Did IRS people lie to Congress, denying targeting of Tea people although they knew of such targeting?"

Acting Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Steven Miller apparently knew that the IRS was involved in delaying applications of conservative groups as early as a year ago, and when questioned by Congressional investigators, he apparently lied.

"For perspective, how many people died in Watergate?"

Your perspective question is a comparison between apples and grapefruit.

Federal authorities have opened a criminal investigation of whether Internal Revenue Service employees broke the law when they targeted conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status — the latest setback for an agency that is the subject of withering bipartisan criticism and multiple congressional inquiries.

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said Tuesday that the Justice Department and the FBI began the probe after the IRS acknowledged that it selected conservative groups with the words “tea party” and “patriot” in their names for special reviews.

Also Tuesday, a widely anticipated report by the IRS’s watchdog described the agency’s tax-exempt unit — where the screening of conservative groups occurred — as a bureaucratic mess, with some employees ignorant about tax laws, defiant of their supervisors and blind to the appearance of impropriety.

The watchdog report is likely to stoke growing outrage over the agency’s actions. No IRS employees involved in the decisions have been disciplined, and one has been promoted, said House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), whose panel prompted the audit.

The IRS watchdog’s report painted a dark picture of the tax-exempt unit at the IRS. It said the decision to focus on groups with conservative-sounding names originated in the IRS “determinations unit” in Cincinnati in early 2010. Officials blacked out any details of what prompted the decision. (What! Man is that going to interesting when its forced out of them)

Andrew, I think you are on to something big. Of course Obama was born in Kenya, but they lost his freaking birth certificate and his mother, knowing he was going to one day run for president, was able to bribe the Hawaiian records clerk to issue a fraudulent certificate, making her Muslim baby son eligible to be President and to destroy all that is good and wonderful about America.

Not releasing Obama's school records is all about hiding a politically embarrassing revelation...but not low grades. During college, Obama had a permit to carry and organized a variant of the NRA, the Negro Rifle Association. Obama's NRA never really got traction at Harvard, but is annotated in his college records and at this point is not something he wants to share with the American public.

The really big scandal, not Benghazi, hasn't come out yet and I'm going to let you in on it first. Obama is a mole for the KGB. That's right, the POTUS is a spook. When this hits Fox News, he's a goner.

Well that was most informative but it was not as you claimed that “we do know where Obama was” throughout the attacks. You wouldn’t by any chance be privy as to his whereabouts and actions after 5:00 PM. Something tells me that would be the important information since the attack was only 30 min. into its total 8 hour length and former Navy SEALs Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods are killed about 5 1/2 hours after he arrived back at the White House.

Do you see what I mean?

Like you said, he was back at the White House. I've heard at least one wingnut speculate that Obama somehow disappeared for 8 hours and nobody knew where he was. That would be a neat trick for any President.

If I had to speculate I'd guess that he spent his evening in the WH situation room getting briefed on what was going on overseas. Or more likely, maybe he enjoyed a movie with his daughters in the WH theater room and chose to let the military handle things? These wingnuts act like the President makes every military decision on every battlefield in real-time.

Also, it should be pointed out WHY the two NAVY Seals were killed. Because they were part of the rescue team that was sent to help after the initial attack. So all this talk about not sending anyone and ordering everyone to "Stand Down" is crap. Had they sent more troops into an unknown situation it is likely that we would have even more casualties. Now George Bush would have handled it differently. He would have ordered an immediate air strike on Liberia.

The "new" e-mails regarding Benghazi make it clear that the State Department was not going to associate the attacks with any Islamic militant group until the investigation was completed.

All this mess boils down to one thing.

A bunch of people were scrambling to make sense out of what happened and they were all trying not to make snap judgments that would later backfire on them if their assumptions were incorrect.

Boy was that a mistake.

The President was not involved and neither was Hillary Clinton.

Republicans are calling the changes political. So be it. Nothing is going to change their minds but enough with the beating dead horses and trying to lay them on the White House steps.

CIA Deputy Mike Morell is the person who made almost all of the changes that have people up in arms. The State Department had concerns with calling it a terrorist attack and/or associating it with known terrorist groups without solid proof.

Will there be more hearings? Probably. Will everyone's questions be answered. Probably not.

So we'll just argue about it for the next 25 years and never satisfy any of the Republican cheerleading minds.

Chuck Schumer and Al Franken and others sent a letter to IRS, telling them they should target the tea party.

All of you would not be so gleeful if it was you or one of your liberal groups. Malik Obama got his tax exempt status in 30 days and they made it retro active back 2 years.

The Benghazi hearings are supposed to be about preventing similar future events. There was no crime committed and it is not necessary to know everything to develop a prevention strategy.

I don't think Obama is worth a crap as a president and I think Eric Holder is a pitiful excuse for his position. However, none of the current distractions are criminal in nature and do not deserve the time allocated when considering other needs of the country. The IRS should probably be more aggressive in investigating those that apply for exemption from taxes. Why should there be any exemptions including religious organizations? The more exemptions granted the more those paying have to pay. The same is true with all the AHCA exemptions, what is the justification for those if it is the best thing to come along since ice cream?

It is amazing how people think the president is aware of every activity and approves everything before the fact. The federal government is bigger than most people can even imagine and for certain bigger than is manageable.

This is about more than incompetence and a lack of willingness to protect US Diplomats and Soldiers on the part of the White House and State Department. The reason this is so big is because of the trafficking of arms from Libya to Islamist rebels in Syria. ...Trafficking of arms to people who will eventually be working against the United States.

This linkage will tie the whole fiasco and the decision to "stand down" to the White House, where Obama cowered off to his bedroom so he could pretend he had no part in the decision making.

Beyond that is the lies. We CANNOT let politicians in office LIE to us. In a representative republic, the voters have to know what the truth is so they can make sound decisions in the voting booth. If they are making their decisions based on lies the entire system is doomed.

In a way I disagree, BRP. I think this is an indictment of the CIA, and how the CIA orchestrates turmoil in the Middle East. Maybe I'm naive and we've always done this. Since it is all secret, we may have more mud on our faces and blood on our hands than we care to admit. Our record in Latin America serves as a reminder to just how powerful corporations are: we interfered in the affairs there for a century to keep it friendly to US business interests, and the people, especially the poor, paid a heavy price. A big part of that price was the switch to communism as a backlash against capitalism. Communism sounded pretty good in contrast to the extreme wealth imbalance they lived under.

Ambassador Stevens twice said no to military offers of more security, U.S. officials say

CAIRO -- ] In the month before attackers stormed U.S. facilities in Benghazi and killed four Americans, U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens twice turned down offers of security assistance made by the senior U.S. military official in the region in response to concerns that Stevens had raised in a still secret memorandum, two government officials told McClatchy

Why Stevens, who died of smoke inhalation in the first of two attacks that took place late Sept. 11 and early Sept. 12, 2012, would turn down the offers remains unclear. The deteriorating security situation in Benghazi had been the subject of a meeting that embassy officials held Aug. 15, where they concluded they could not defend the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi. The next day, the embassy drafted a cable outlining the dire circumstances and saying it would spell out what it needed in a separate cable

“In light of the uncertain security environment, US Mission Benghazi will submit specific requests to US Embassy Tripoli for additional physical security upgrades and staffing needs by separate cover,” said the cable, which was first reported by Fox News

Army Gen. Carter Ham, then the head of the U.S. Africa Command, did not wait for the separate cable, however. Instead, after reading the Aug. 16 cable, Ham phoned Stevens and asked if the embassy needed a special security team from the U.S. military. Stevens told Ham it did not, the officials said

Weeks later, Stevens traveled to Germany for an already scheduled meeting with Ham at AFRICOM headquarters. During that meeting, Ham again offered additional military assets, and Stevens again said no, the two officials said

“He didn’t say why. He just turned it down,” a defense official who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the subject told McClatchy

The offers of aid and Stevens’ rejection of them have not been revealed in either the State Department’s Administrative Review Board investigation of the Benghazi events or during any of the congressional hearings and reports that have been issued into what took place there

From the brainwashed degage comes this gem: "All of you would not be so gleeful if it was you or one of your liberal groups." Republicans are still furious over IRS scrutiny of non-profit groups with "Tea Party" and "patriots" in their names, but the life of the scandal depends entirely upon the political affiliation of the hundreds of other groups investigated by tax officials. Only 25% of the 300 scrutinized groups seeking non-profit status were reportedly affiliated with right-wing causes. Whether the rest aligned with left-leaning causes like abortion and climate change will not be known until the entire list is released. The IRS told Gawker today that the full list has yet to be made public. The witch hunt of liberal churches happened under the leadership of IRS commissioner Mark Everson, a Republican appointed by George W. Bush in 2003. Another Bush appointee, Douglas Schulman, headed the IRS during the scrutiny of Tea Party groups seeking non-profit status in 2012. Schulman's term ended on November 11, after the 2012 election. So, what’s your theory now?

It was a U-Tube video and we are going to get the guy that created it and played it on the Internet. WHAT A LYING TROLL HILLARY CLINTON IS. Some final thoughts before I go to work: 1. Why was the Libyan embassy even open and manned with Americans? Had not Obama recently bombed Libya and assassinated the leader of Libya? 2. The talking points are not the issue, the video of Hillary Clinton coldly reading them is! 3. The only other video of Hillary Clinton more reflective of her insanity and narsassism is the classic speech where she tried to "talk Black" at an NAACP event. So sad, yet so funny,

The lying dog Hillary Clinton will never hold national office again. I guarantee it!

aniebelle,

I do not have a theory but I do have a fact. It is an abuse of power, illegal, for the IRS to target any group whether it be conservative, liberal, black, white, gay, straight or whatever. Everyone should be outraged when the IRS does this. With the IRS admitting it illegally targeted conservative groups it is a warning that o'bastard care will deprive people of needed health care who do not agree with his communist ideology. The problem is mindless liberals like you have not the courage to stand up and say this is wrong regardless of who is targeted. Chickensh!t liberals like you are giving o'bastard pass and he knows this and that is why he is getting away with so many lies. Did you know that while Bill "cigar" Clinton was president Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Shawn Hannity, Neil Bortz and other notable conservatives were audited? Did you know that Mitt Romney was audited twice by the IRS during his campaign? This is wrong regardless of who is president. Show some courage and stand up to what is wrong.

Probably. But was it any different than any other administration? No. THAT is the point. Over and over this president has been criticized for things that every president does, in many cases for things that Republican presidents were more guilty of.

There is not doubt that a diverse, young crowd at a OWS rally is not as well behaved as a old, white Tea Party gathering. You can choose between boisterous behavior or rude, homophobic racist signs. Of course, you'll also have to admit that each group's bad image can be attributed to a small minority of the overall group. Or not.

I agree with you that meddling on the part of the CIA has often done harm to the cause of freedom and resulted in resentment towards the US that makes communism look attractive to some who end up under the heel of dictators we have propped up.

I am struggling to understand how you make the leap from the danger of the public being lied to by politicians and our diplomatic efforts to arm Islamist rebels to singling out the CIA. The State Department and the White House are actively involved in driving recent instability and the CIA is just their puppet.

May 16, 2013 at 10:29 a.m.

BRP, I guess I should have addressed that part as well. What one side may call "lies" the other might call "partial information" in an attempt not to reveal anything classified. However, politicians lie. Both sides and in the middle. Now, the last administration, and pretty much every administration before that. Congress too. Hell, even local politicians lie. Anyone who has an aversion to dishonesty better not run for office. I'm not sure you can be effective if you don't know how to lie. Carter might have been the only honest president we have ever had (and you can see how well he did) but everyone who worked for him lied, so it doesn't matter.

Lies are easier to document now, so they have gotten VERY creative in lying without ACTUALLY lying.

As far as singling out the CIA: They are the only group that can completely conceal their actions. The State Department and WH have to be at least somewhat transparent, unless participating with the CIA. Then they have to lay down a trail to distract people's attention away from the matter without looking too obvious.

Yet no Repub has stated exactly what was covered up. President Obama has once again made Repubs look like idiots. He's smarter than the whole bunch but they don't see it. They just keep going around in circles like a dog biting his tail. They are NEVER GOING TO HAVE ANYTHING TO IMPEACH HIM. NEVER!! Also, their chances of destroying Hillary Clinton's run for President have about as much chance of success as the Koch brothers and Karl Rove had in defeating Barack Obama in 2012.

The best they can hope for right now is they don't lose the House and the Senate in 2014. The Birthers were made to look like fools, Benghazi has fallen apart and soon, very soon the IRS debacle will fizzle out so what's the next psuedo scandal?

May 16, 2013 at 10:45 a.m.

The State Department expressed fears about what their political opponents might do if the truth about what motivated the Bengazi attack were to be revealed. So the White House stifled the best intelligence at the time and issued statements that they knew to be lies. If this is not a political motivation for altering the talking points, what is? Petraeus was right. If revealing the latest intelligence posed a security issue (as it often is), it is better to keep silent for a bit rather than to cover-up the truth by lying to the American people and the rest of the world. All this is undeniable, except for the willfully ignorant, represented so dutifully and reliably in this forum. Thus far, nothing illegal has been revealed, but playing politics with the lives of our diplomatic corp and servicemen in dangerous regions is very serious and is certainly worthy of further investigation. Of course, this sort of thing has happened under Republican administrations, as Obama and his media PR apparatus ceaselessly remind us. He should be held to the same level of scrutiny. What form the political ramification will take is yet to be determined. We are still early in the investigations. We’ll see if Republicans and the media have the stomach to pursue it adequately.

The AP and IRS scandals, while chilling in terms of Obama’s disregard for basic democratic rights and sensibilities, did not involve the loss of American lives. The fault for each of these distractions from other important issues is the fault of none other than the Intern-Commander-in-Chief, his underlings, and his willfully ignorant disciples.

There is a clear pattern of deceit and corruption here. Barack Obama is the most Machiavellian (and thin-skinned) president since Richard Nixon.

Our current and past tolerance of distortion is a huge part of how we have gotten so screwed up. I reject it from Democrats. I reject it from Republicans. At all levels.

I wish all citizens would just say enough is enough and join hands to demand honesty and integrity from elected officials so we can get back to a discussion based on facts instead of this crazy discussion we have today, where we cannot even clearly identify what is fact and fiction because elected officials so often lie that you feel like you have to fact check every damn thing that comes out of their mouths. They hate him because he is better than they are and they know it. It kills them to see him standing there in front of a podium with the Seal of the President of the United States. So they have done everything in their power to obstruct, detract, minimalize and yes, even destroy with fake scandal after fake scandal because in their eyes he doesn't deserve to be in the White House. He was born in Hawaii(a place some will never see in their lifetime), he spent part of his childhood in a foreign land, he speaks well, he writes well(something most of them can't do)he dresses well and he is fairly handsome. He does not cheat on his wife, he has no scandalous affairs hidden in his past or his present, he pays his taxes(without alot of loop hole deductions) and finally he does all the things that some of them can only dream about but know will NEVER HAPPEN FOR THEM. His haters are small-minded bigots for the most part and their lives are lacking. They will never admit their bigotry because they know they would then be looked down upon in the way they do with President Obama. So they throw their rocks and create obstructions all in the name of "HATED POLICIES" rather than their bigotry.

Today, the stock market is sitting at over 15000 when President Obama took office it was down to less than 8000 for all practical purposes it had crashed, People's homes were being foreclosed, over 700,000 jobs PER MONTH were being lost and the automobile industry had gone belly up. The country was still heavily involved in Iraq and major banks were on the verge of collapse. Although the economic situation has improved his critics don't give him any credit for the improvement. However, they were all too willing to blame him for the economic woes of the country (that existed before he even took office)during the 2012 campaign. In spite of their attempts to shift the blame for the country's condition, they still lost the election. This just added more fuel to their bigoted hate.

Now they are in search of anything they think will give them their one shot at driving him from office but it's not working so they start a whisper campaign throwing the word "Impeachment" word around. They have NOTHING ON THIS MAN BUT THAT'S NOT STOPPING THEM BECAUSE IN THEIR BIGOTED MINDS HE JUST DOES NOT BELONG IN THE WHITE HOUSE. THAT IS THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION, PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

The tea baggers are mostly racists white supremacist bigots who think they are the only ones entitled to run the country which would be another disaster like the Bush administration. Any mature adult public official who truly cared about the country as a whole would be able to put political differences aside for the betterment of the American people unless there is another sinister reason, and it is. Their hatred for the president stems from him being an African American and everybody knows it. The tea baggers can't wait to find any and every little thing to B#%ch about. Their nit picking is a revenge tactic to derail important issues which shows what kind of mindset we're really dealing with. Again you wear your ignorance like a badge of honor.

I do not like o'bastard because 2/3 of all the casualties in Afghanistan have occurred in the last four years while he was president and fools like you give him a pass

This Benghazi circus tent fire and its attendant ‘[*right wing outrageorama]’ is a tempest in a teapot. Republicans are having their own ‘Gotcha’ moment, practicing the exact same thing they whined excessively about for the last ten years. There’s a word for that - but it escapes me at the moment.

[*thanks MickeyRat]

”Sherman. Let’s go to the Wayback machine.”

”Ok Mr. Peabody!”

The unbelievable politicization (con job) of intelligence in the run-up to the Iraq War may be the worst intelligence scandal in the CIA’s history. And I’d venture to say worse than the intelligence abuses during the Vietnam War; with the resulting of hearings in the 1970’s disrupting the cozy relationship with all administrations (until Dick Cheney appeared) and they then had to answer and report to both the White House and the Congress. Were there any penalties for those who supported CIA’s authoring (directed by Dick Cheney) of phony intelligence to produce a ‘slam dunk’ briefing to the Smirking Chimp? The CIA’s production of ’ unclassified’ white paper for the Congress right before the vote to authorize Shock & Awe in October 2002 marked a ‘politically motivated’ misuse of classified information used to influence congressional opinion, but there were no consequences!

Dateline 2009!! - the CIA was duped by a Taliban double agent and nine CIA operatives were killed by a suicide bomber at a CIA base in the ‘Stan’, to which Panetta proclaimed that the bombing involved 'no operational failures’ and allowed the operational bureau responsible for the program to investigate itself. No, I’m not making this up. Even when the OIG(Office of the Inspector General) documented Agency lies to Congress concerning a secret drug program in Peru (documented as a secret drug interdiction program that was responsible for the death of an American missionary and her infant daughter in 2001), no significant disciplinary action was taken.

Let’s also not forget destruction of the torture tapes, a clear case of gross obstruction of justice in view of White House orders (nudge, nudge, wink wink) to protect the tapes, led to no consequences at the CIA. The CIA along with the former and present administrations controversy over the wholly illegal use of drone aircraft; the intelligence failure that accompanied the Arab Spring in 2011; and the inadequate security presence in Libya in the wake of the killing of Muammar Gaddafi have not received the anything like what we’re seeing today.

“Washington loves a scandal, even one so clearly egregious that the Democrats will be reluctant to mount a principled defense of the Obama administration. The situation is only worse because of the secrecy that surrounds all key decisions coming out of the inner group in the White House, so much so that no one quite knows why the administration took so long to release this story or to explain the role that the attorney general had in overseeing events or in approving the subpoenas.

“For the president and his aides, the first item on the agenda is damage control. The administration is likely in full-blown (but secret) polling mode, seeing how high the tides of dissent and resentment will rise, and who they will envelop. My guess is that Holder is history. Right now, it looks as if Obama will survive, though probably as a lame duck, just four months into his new term in office. It is a sad fall for an administration that has always prided itself as having escaped the muck of ordinary politics. But not this time. We are past the point where presidential protestations that the administration is innocent on all charges will be treated as evidence that it is covering up its own misdeeds. Cheap talk is dangerous in all professions, even in politics. The real tragedy is that the president and his attorney general believed overmuch in their own exalted rhetoric; the nation, and the world, is all the poorer because of their excesses.”

Continued from my 13:19 post

Any and all CIA components and State Dept. personnel working the Middle East and North Africa have a high probability of being the target of militant and terrorist organizations. Ooh why’s that Mr. Peaboby? Because of the Agency’s past roles in the Bush administration’s war on terror, black sites, GITMO and the Obama administration’s widespread use of drone aircraft and Special Ops across the Middles East & Africa.

While the never ending incompetence and politicization of our so called intelligence agency(s) gives me pause, what really really worries me is the DOJ’s arbitrary tapping of the telephone records of reporters and editors of the AP. And their associated ”Trust me” response. I fear this only the tip of the iceberg of what is happening and actually there is a war on the press hidden in plain sight. Really you ask? Is not this administration running roughshod over civil liberties and here freedom of the press?

I hope you all like reading stories about police & surveillance states – cause you’re living in one.

They are the most racist people on earth as they actually think the blacks cannot survive without the handouts they give them that actually keep the blacks in poverty. They will never admit that the worst and most unsafe place to live in America is government housing. The truth is right in front of them but they are to stupid to understand all the while claiming to be intellectuals. Liberals are just plain stupid. Like you said, he was back at the White House.

(No, that is something you claimed I only gave you the benefit of the doubt for the sake of the debate)

If I had to speculate I'd guess that he spent his evening in the WH situation room getting briefed on what was going on overseas.

(Now you’re speculating but before you said “Actually, we do know where Obama was during the Benghazi attacks”. So which is it?)

Or more likely, maybe he enjoyed a movie with his daughters in the WH theater room and chose to let the military handle things?

(This would be the most damning of all that he had so little interest in our people being slaughtered that he checked out a flick for entertainment)

These wingnuts act like the President makes every military decision on every battlefield in real-time.

(I don’t think that a Commander in Chief has to make operational and tactical decisions but for sure should establish overall strategy. However I’m now hearing from his own aids that the task is just too large and complex for him to effectively control.)

Maximus, enjoy your golf game. Hope you don't scuff your solid gold putter.

Anyhoo, I really do think that a lot of people assume that the President knows much more than he does, and can affect much more than he can.

I mean, how is this one guy to know right off the bat that the Benghazi attacks were terrorists using the cover of protests rather than a spontaneous consequence of the protest itself? It sounded plausible to most people at the time. After all, there were other protests leading up to it and it's not like a riot in Libya is an unprecedented circumstance. And what could he possibly gain by lying about that? Isn't it splitting hairs anyway?

But many of these conspiracy theorists would have you believe that there was some sort of intentional removal of protection from the ambassador on 9-11-12 or something. Or that a magical team of superheroes could immediately fly to a particular house in the suburbs and quell all resistance there, and be able to tell the few "real" bad guys apart from the hundreds of protesters, and not get shot up in the process, and avoid hitting any nearby houses or residents, and identify and rescue the four people who were in trouble. And they think the President should have directed it personally, or at least used the bat-phone on his desk.

It's the kind of magical thinking that lets people believe that the CIA or the Department of Homeland Security or whoever can protect them from every single thing. They think that these giant bureaucrazies full of fallible humans will prevent every terror plot. And if they don't? Well, who cares about catching the actual terrorists, but by God you should nail the President for it, or at least that darn female who ran the State Department.

Also, it should be pointed out WHY the two NAVY Seals were killed.

Because they were part of the rescue team that was sent to help after the initial attack.

(Who sent them? I thought they went on their own initiative after being ordered not to go.)

So all this talk about not sending anyone and ordering everyone to "Stand Down" is crap.

(If you're relying on your above statement to back this up you may be ever so slightly wrong.)

Had they sent more troops into an unknown situation it is likely that we would have even more casualties.

(That is a distinct possibility but isn’t that what these rescue teams are trained and employed for. This was the typical situation they should be able to handle. If you’re going to wait until the situation is safe and stable you could just have the pool boy from Tripoli drive over a bus and pick everybody up.)

OK, but I thought we are spending all of this money to maintain a quick reactionary force and military presence all over the globe so we can take care of situations like this.

It is tempting to talk about how Obama managed to castrate that very powerful resource but there is a more important point...

However for our civilian employees in obviously dangerous and violent countries it is nothing less than criminal to let them go essentially unprotected.

Or

Iraqis/Afghanis who fight fellow Iraqis/Afghanis?

Or

Fellow Jews who fought on the side of Hitler even as their own were being sent to death camps?

Or

Chinese Koumingtang who fought against fellow Chinese in World War II?

Or

White Irish who continue to fight against fellow White Irish (known as Irish Catholic/Prostetant)?

There's more than skin color, race, ethnicity that either unites or divides any specific group.

The first individual killed at the original and true Boston Tea Party was a black man. That didn't help or make slavery obsolete in America, or Native American genocide any less a genocide because fellow native americans took part in their own oppression, or the Holocaust any less a horrific and heinous act, targeting certain segments of the German population.

Different tea party groups may have different angles, many participating aren't aware of. However, their core beliefs and goals are where the answers to their true identity can be found.

Point being, individuals, groups (ethnic and other) have always unwittingly taken part in what later became either their own demise or oppression.

Most todays' taxpaying African-Americans don't realize that if not for that federal government they would have never been allowed to be the tax paying Americans they've become in modern times in the first place. It took an act of Congress to force, beg, plead and provide all kinds of incentives and other goodies to the private job sector (which remains primarily white/male) into doing what their Christian beliefs should have inspired them to do in the first place. Without any federal government oversight, that same private employment sector that existed well into the 1970s and still exist on some level to this day, will slither right back into their old backwood/intolerant habits. The one where blacks worked alongside whites, performing the same jobs but made far far less. Blacks were the last hired/first fired. They couldn't even take their annual vacation until all whites had taken theirs first, and by their time had rolled around the annual vacation leave time had run out for the year, and the process started all over again. In foundaries that ran 24/7 blacks had to work holidays in order that their fellow white coworkers could spin time with their families. They also had to work to allow whites to leaven for weeks at a time during hunting season. This wasn't some early 20TH America either, but 1960s, '70s into 1980s and part '90s America.

OK, I'm not a navy seal or special forces or anything like that. But I'm pretty sure they don't want to just grab a gun and jump into unknown situations. I think they train extensively for each operation. More like The Dirty Dozen, less like a video game.

Remember, there were lots of protesters around the consulate, and it was in a city that could muster probably thousands of angry young men with AK-47s at the drop of a hat. Tactically, what do you do in that situation? Send a thousand troops? Carpet bomb the area? Do a "Blackhawk Down" part II? I don't think there was a good solution.

I really do think that a lot of people assume that the President knows much more than he does, and can affect much more than he can.

In reference to our present place holder they’re called Democrats but I’ve always had low expectations for him and that has proven to be prognosticative.

I mean, how is this one guy to know right off the bat that the Benghazi attacks were terrorists using the cover of protests rather than a spontaneous consequence of the protest itself?

There was no protest or protesters and that was known from the very first.

It sounded plausible to most people at the time.

Not to the people on the ground that reported their observations.

And what could he possibly gain by lying about that?

If they told the truth it would expose their lies about diplomatic security, the effectiveness of terrorist organizations, and that Libya was a foreign policy success.

Isn't it splitting hairs anyway?

No.

But many of these conspiracy theorists would have you believe that there was some sort of intentional removal of protection from the ambassador on 9-11-12 or something.

Not intentional but incompetence and malfeasance.

A few CIA members at the annex were able to accomplish that ad hoc. However no one else in the government seem to be able or willing to do the same for them.

The IRS is a powerful organization that can bring misery to innocent people. It will be interesting to see how they handle their duties involving the AHCA. The hiring to administer the program is in the thousands and it is supposed to save money, provide more and better care without increasing taxes? Indeed, I believe the real scandal is that these political organizations like the Tea Party are getting a 501 (c) tax-exempt status in the first place. Clearly, pouring hundreds of millions of dollars from secret donors into advertising and political campaigns is not about social welfare.

Unbelievable

The IRS official who led the tax-exempt organizations unit when Tea Party groups were targeted is now in charge of the IRS office responsible for ObamaCare, two Capitol Hill sources confirmed. The acknowledgement comes after the administration announced that the official’s successor -- who had only been on the job a few days -- would be retiring. And it fueled criticism of the agency, as the outgoing IRS commissioner prepared to face lawmakers’ questions at a hearing Friday morning. “Stunning. Just stunning,” Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said in reaction to the latest development. President Obama, meanwhile, maintained Thursday that he didn’t know about the investigation into the IRS program until it was made public. The ObamaCare official in question, Sarah Hall Ingram, had been serving as commissioner of the office responsible for tax-exempt organizations from 2009 to 2012 -- the division included the group that targeted Tea Partiers -- and has since left to serve as director of the IRS' Affordable Care Act division. That unit is responsible for enforcing parts of the health care law, including the fines associated with the so-called individual mandate -- the requirement to buy health insurance.

Does anyone find it odd that o'bastard never knows about anything until it is reported in the news? He is probably the most uninformed person in the country. Amazing!

With this little whore in charge I as well as many others will never get any medical procedures approved under o'bastardcare.

And we have also uncovered another o'bastard lie. The acting IRS Commissioner, Steven Miller, that o'bastard said he wanted his resignation was already set to leave his position in June. Is there no end to o'bastard's lies? And fools like you liberals on here keep giving him a pass. Are you that stupid and blind, and mesmerized by o'bastard you cannot see the truth? Brainless idiots like you should not even be allowed to vote.

A perfect example of a hussein obama loyalist.

About a half-hour into a conference call with reporters Friday afternoon, senior Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner said “I’m not good at math,” she confessed as she tried to summon a statistic.

So now we have found out a senior IRS official is not good at math. One would think that being good at math would be a qualification to be an employee of the hussein obama regime.

Yes, the more I read about this Tea Party and IRS issue the more I’m convinced those IRS employees were probably right to question and seek some clarification on those applications.

The Chattanooga Tea Party is a good example. Clearly, the Chattanooga Tea Party is not in any way a “social welfare” organization. It’s pretty darn obvious that it’s a political organization being set up to influence the selection, nomination, election, appointment or defeat of candidates to local, state, and federal public office.

So the question is why didn’t the Chattanooga Tea Party just be honest and apply as a tax exempt organization under Section 527 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code? I suspect it’s because they simply don’t want to publicly disclose their donors, which they would have to do if they had filed under Section 527 of the Internal Revenue code.

Plus, there were so many filing for tax exempt status under that particular tax exempt code, using the names tea party and patriot, that they were bound to raise red flags at the IRS. From: Think Progress org:

"The spike in 501(c)(4) groups comes after the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United v. FEC decision that outside groups may make unlimited political expenditures. Since then, some 501(c)(4) organizations have begun abusing the system. Though groups engaged in some political activity may qualify as “social welfare groups” and receive tax-exempt status under this section of the tax code, electioneering cannot be their predominant activity. Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS, for example, told the IRS that any political ads run by the group would be “limited in amount” and “would not constitute the group’s primary purpose.” Campaign finance reform advocates have argued that, in light of more than $70 million in “independent expenditure” ad spending, the group’s primary purpose is clearly campaign activity. But rather than register with the Federal Election Commission as a political committee, Crossroads GPS continues to claim that it is not such a group and need not publicly identify its funders."

Organizations filing for tax exempt status under the 501(c)(4) status more than doubled, from just over a thousand to over 3 thousand. Many filed under the heading tea party, patriot. Out of that increase, the IRS pulled 75 using the heading patriot/tea party for further closer scrutiny. That's really a dip in the bucket considering.

Herman Cain was his own worst enemy. I listened to that man on the radio for years and admired him greatly, until he was outed for his utter hypocrisy.

Then you would be wrong. Wouldn’t you? However that is completely understandable when you take everything into account.

It would seem to me that promoting political education and activism would be of a high order of justification to be classified as a social welfare organization.

The difference is that the Democratic Party with the cooperation from a sympathetic press seek out and expose the elements of racism within their opposition for political gain.

After all, the Democratic party is the home of the KKK. They have to work really hard to project their weaknesses onto their opposition. Come to think of it, they are also the home of the Black Panthers, and every other racist group I can think of. Damn those guys are good at what they do!

I don’t think political advertisements being paid for by secret for-profit corporate donors qualifies as political education. And I certainly do not think that a political organization set up by secret corporate front groups qualify as a “social welfare” organization under the IRS 501 c(4) code.

Again, the only reason these organizations are trying so hard to obtain this status is because they don’t want to publicly disclose their donors, which they would have to do if they filed under Section 527 of the IRS code. The Tea Party is just one example:

"A new academic study confirms that front groups with longstanding ties to the tobacco industry and the billionaire Koch brothers planned the formation of the Tea Party movement more than a decade before it exploded onto the U.S. political scene.

Far from a genuine grassroots uprising, this astroturf effort was curated by wealthy industrialists years in advance. Many of the anti-science operatives who defended cigarettes are currently deploying their tobacco-inspired playbook internationally to evade accountability for the fossil fuel industry's role in driving climate disruption."

Here's my take on the TEA party. I'm sure it's not 100% accurate, but this is what I think, in case anyone cares. I know most of you don't so you don't need to bother to tell me so.

I know a lot of young men and women who consider themselves part of the TEA party. It's obviously not just old white guys. Even the traditional Republican "old guard" is not exclusively old white guys.

Although the TEA party started as astroturf with a big money and media injection by the Kochs and a few other elites, it has since morphed into a real movement. Originally it focused mostly on lowering taxes and labor costs for the fabulously wealthy, like our friend Maximu$$$$, but a lot of people jumped on the bandwagon and it became a big umbrella. You have the libertarians (Original TEAs "OT"), the second amenment people, the pro-life folks, very conservative Christians, and the - for whatever reason - rabid Obama haters. Maybe a couple of others.

The thing that unites them all (except for the OTs), in my opinion, is a sense of disenfranchisement. Most of them fear that their lifestyle or traditions or favored status are slipping away. That's why the TEA party in Washington mostly just blocks everything. They don't want change of any sort. Plus sometimes they nod to the OTs and pay lip service to the notion of limited government.

I don't think the TEA party is going away. I think those people have always been here, now they are just more organized and labeled. It will be tough for them to continue to be a political force though, if they don't learn to play nice with their more centrist cousins. You can win a couple of terms by claiming to be outsider rogues, but after a while you have to actually do your job or the constituency starts to notice.

I have no problem with the Tea Party's educational goals. We indeed are ignorant as a society regarding civics and our constitution. What I don't understand is the religious stuff. I cannot support the Tea Party as along as they allow Evangelicals to insert their theocratic goals.

The mouthpieces of the Tea Party represent a group of anti science, anti gay, anti religious freedom extremists.

“We see their spin on issues from international to domestic — and there’s a lot of symmetry from one to the other. There’s a lack of disclosure, misdirection and a lack of confidence in the American people that they won’t understand if they are given full disclosure, and yet that was the basis of the contract this president had with the people in 2008.” - Former Rep. “Indifferent to the problem of radical Islam, desperate to win an election on the claim that Obama had routed terrorists, and eager to throw a critic of their favorite religion into jail for a YouTube video they deemed hate speech, his aides spun what happened in Libya according to these biases.

“Hillary Clinton was stomping around, raging about how that video had hurt the feelings of Muslims and how its creator deserved jail time. For two weeks, Obama treated a national humiliation at the hands of Islamic terrorists as an occasion to muse about the need for greater “civility” in the world.

“Obama is still struggling to line up his lies. If he knew, as he now claims, that it was premeditated terrorism from the beginning, why did he spend two weeks on that ludicrous “civility” tour, bouncing from show to show and speech to speech to denounce a video? Gregory Hicks, America’s number two man in Libya, called the YouTube protests a “non-event” there. Yet Obama was happy to leave the impression that Western provocation lay at its root, as that absolved him of responsibility and fit with his far-left ideology of a peaceful Islam that poses no threat to America as long as odious people aren’t antagonizing it.

“It is rich that journalists who didn’t mind seeing the creator of the YouTube video thrown into jail (on conveniently “unrelated” charges to his alleged abuse of artistic freedom) now discover their own First Amendment freedom violated. The Obama administration has been snooping on the phone records of reporters. Now that the far left hand of the White House is wiretapping them, it is suddenly okay to talk about tyranny.

“The far left hand of the White House also pushed propaganda that cast constitutional conservatives as “extremists.” The repeated refrain was that these hopelessly irrational Americans posed a danger to the common good. The Department of Homeland Security even wrote up a report about them. Is it any wonder that IRS officials, operating under this rhetoric, gave heightened scrutiny to conservative groups with Tea Party, patriot, and other terms deemed subversive by this administration in their names?”

Just like the old saying “They claim they’re just a little bit pregnant”. The IRS is not really guilty of anything as what they did was just a wee bit of law breaking.

Plus you should really review the number of those targeted.

Leaf,

I think you overemphasise the reducing taxes thing. It was/is really more about reducing spending and operating the federal government with a balanced budget. I think many would be willing to talk about marginal tax increases but have no patience for that until the spending side is taken care of. There is a big concern that we are spending future generations, our children and grand children, into poverty. It is selfish to engage in deficit spending in the name of temporarily propping up the economy during our lifetime at the expense of our children.

That is the core as I understand it.

Jjimez said: “Organizations filing for tax exempt status under the 501(c)(4) status more than doubled, from just over a thousand to over 3 thousand. Many filed under the heading tea party, patriot.”

In addition to the huge number of tea party and alleged patriot groups filing for tax exempt status after the Supreme Court’s infamous “corporations are people” ruling, there have been other issues as well. This article in Mother Jones mentions some that even some tea party lawyers have pointed out:

“. . . as conservatives in particular decry the IRS failure, it's also worth considering the dubious fiscal history of some tea party groups, including their pursuit of non-profit status. While the IRS had absolutely no business profiling any groups based on political criteria, it is not blaming the victim to observe that scrutiny was warranted in specific cases—and they include some major tea party outfits and their leaders, documents show.

Indeed, despite the tea party's emphasis on fiscal prudence in government, would-be nonprofit groups launched since the movement's rise in 2009 have left a trail of tax-code shenanigans, infighting, and fiscal irresponsibility. Money raised by some groups was spent frivolously, and in some cases in ways that appeared to flout the tax rules barring nonprofits from political activity. There have been lawsuits between competing organizations over money, and tea party groups have disintegrated because of financial and other mismanagement.

None of which is particularly surprising, given the deluge of fledgling groups. After the tea party movement took off in 2009, thousands of people around the country rushed to join in, many of them creating small nonprofit groups in their local areas. It didn't take long for infighting to set in and for claims of financial improprieties to fly—for example, there was the story of Saint Augustine Tea Party vs. Saint Augustine Tea Party Inc [2]. Scuffles arose around the country [3] as aspiring tea party groups saw money disappear or rules violated.

Since 2009, the Tea Party Patriots, a large national umbrella group, has claimed no fewer than 3,500 affiliates. Many applied for nonprofit status with the IRS, a prime reason the agency was so overwhelmed with applications. The people leading these groups were often neophytes politically and organizationally—or, as Dan Backer, a lawyer for TheTeaParty.net, explained in an interview with Mother Jones this week, "they didn't understand the complexity of what's involved."

"The bottom line is every ethnic group on this planet is raciest!"

I'd say Brazilians are probably the raciest ethnic group since they invented thongs, the "Brazilian", Carnival, and are known for scantily clad women on beautiful beaches.

"It's in the genes,it's a product of the society we live in!"

Those two sentences contradict each other. Genes are out of our control. Societal ills aren't.

"Look at Alprova's disdain of anyone who disagrees w/his world view"

What does that have to do with racism? And I have never felt that alprova had any disdain for anyone here.

"OR EASY'S DISDAIN of anyone he perceives as his intellectual inferior!"

Again, what does that have to do with racism? I have no disdain for anyone here. However, I do have disdain for ignorance, lies, etc.

"It's not just that you see things in a diff.light , it's that if you don't agree w/ them you are somehow inferior, not quite as sane as they are!"

Wrong. There aren't two sides to facts and truth. You and your ilk cling to lies, misinformation, etc. and, when you are called on it, you act like you're entitled to your "different worldview". No, sir, you are not entitled to try to pass you "worldview" off as fact when it is based on lies and factually inaccurate information. Opinions can be wrong.

Once again, you prove every point against your position and your ignorance, jesse.

I don’t believe there are any secrets and/or mystery involving the source of any political donation made by labor unions, which is very different from what has been happening with these various political groups that have been trying to establish their organization as a 501 (c) 4 “social welfare” non-profit. Again, the only reason these organizations are trying so hard to obtain this status is because they don’t want to publicly disclose their donors, which they would have to do if they filed under Section 527 of the IRS code.

So how do you feel when you wake up in your 60's and realize how dumb you still are? You do not gain knowledge or intelligence simply because you get older. You must actively work at it and that is something that you obviously have not done. The fact that you and Plain_Jack_Dennis continue to act like my age limits me and your age gives you some type of advantage is telling. I've never once heard older individuals such as alprova, Ikeithlu, or Rickaroo use their age as a source of knowledge or someone else's age a reason to discredit them.
