Military appreciation in Fort Oglethorpe

photo The Fort Oglethorpe Cruise-In, featuring an array of classic cars, trucks and motorcycles, opens its season in a new location, Gateway Business Center and Mall on Cloud Springs Road.

To celebrate National Military Appreciation Month, service personnel and veterans will be special guests at this month's Fort Oglethorpe Cruise-In.

The event is set for 4-8 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at the Gateway Business Center, 4123 Cloud Springs Road.

The featured charity will be the 6th Cavalry Museum, which will be accepting donations and hosting the 50/50 raffle to benefit its Memorial Garden flag program. The original 105-foot-tall flagpole on the former U.S. Army post (1902-1947) on Barnhardt Circle allows the American flag to fly 24 hours a day seven days a week. The toll taken by weather and wind requires the flags to be replaced annually. The goal is to raise $600 to purchase a new American flag and POW/MIA flag.

The cruise-in also will be the final stop of the Remembering Our Heroes Motorcycle Ride and Poker Run presented by the museum. The ride will cover about 80 miles through North Georgia. Registration begins at 9 a.m. outside the museum on Barnhardt Circle. First bikes go out at 10 a.m.

The cruise-ins are held the third Saturday of the month through October. There is no charge to display a car, truck or specialty vehicle. All entrants are registered for door prizes with concessions, kids play area and other vendors on-site.

Vendor spaces are available for $25, swap-meet spaces are $10.
