Tennessee jobless rate rises to 8 percent

Unemployment rose last month across Tennessee to its highest rate since last September.

The 8 percent jobless rate in the Volunteer State in April was up 0.2 percent from March. The state's unemployment rate last month was 0.5 percent above the U.S. rate of 7.5 percent.

Despite the rise in unemployment in April, Tennessee's jobless rate was still below the 8.1 percent rate of a year ago.

Employment in April grew by 4,500 jobs and over the past year the number of working Tennesseans has grown by 47,900.
