UTC better by 10, 11th in regional

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team shaved 10 strokes off its second round from its first round at the NCAA Columbus (Ohio) Regional on Friday.

The Mocs will need to shave even more in the final round today if they're to advance to the NCAA championship tournament at the Crabapple Course outside of Atlanta.

"You have to play three good days and we've played one," coach Mark Guhne said. "That means we need a great day."

The Mocs shot a 10-over-par 294 and sit in 11th place for the tournament at 30 over. They are 11 strokes behind Texas Tech and New Mexico, which are tied for fifth place.

Only the top five teams advance to Atlanta.

"Even being as far back as we are in positions, we're not as far back in numbers," Guhne said. "But we know we have to shoot something really good tomorrow."

Benni Weilguni had a 2-under 69 to lead the Mocs on Friday. Chris Robb shot 72, Davis Bunn shot 76 and Steven Fox shot 77, while Liam Johnston had the drop score.

"Hopefully we can have two or three of them shoot what Benni shot today," Guhne said. "We need to shoot three or four under and see what happens."

UNLV and South Carolina are tied for the lead at 16 under. Virginia, San Francisco, Charlotte and Missouri are between UTC and fifth place.
