East Hamilton couldn't get the hits when needed and left 12 baserunners stranded in a season-ending 7-4 baseball loss at Upperman.

The Hurricanes, who boarded a school bus at 6:30 Friday morning to play the Class AA sectional game in Baxter, Tenn., left the bases loaded in the first, fourth and fifth innings.

"It's a tough loss because you're so close to getting to the state tournament, but we just left too many runners out there and then we had a guy caught stealing and another picked off," East Hamilton coach Steve Garland said.

After falling behind 5-0, the Hurricanes made a surge in the fifth and closed within a run at 5-4. However, they suffered through a rally-killing rain delay -- the second of the game -- just when Garland thought they were close to taking the lead and possibly breaking the game open.

"You can't really argue about a rain delay, especially on a safety issue and especially after the pitcher slips making his throw and your guy gets hit in the head," Garland said.

Austin Gatewood was the only Hurricane with multiple hits, getting two singles and reaching base four times.

East Hamilton, which moves from 6-AA to 5-AAA next year, ended the season 25-14.

Raiders, Owls rained out

Baylor and Ooltewah will try again today to play their way into the state tournament.

Ooltewah is to play at Murfreesboro Riverdale at 7 tonight in a game that was postponed Friday.

Baylor is trying for a doubleheader against Pope John Paul II either at PJPII at 6 or at Belmont University at 8. Unless one team sweeps tonight, they will be playing a deciding game at 6 p.m. Sunday.
