400 hear author Deborah Houston

What: About 400 guests heard Deborah Houston, author of "Father Knows Best," speak at the "Let's Save Our Sons and Daughters" banquet held at the Chattanooga Convention Center sponsored by the Chattanooga chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women.

Benefits: The coalition's projects to help at-risk youth and eliminate gang violence.

Dragon Boat Festival raises over $230,000

What: More than 1,000 racers took part in the Children's Hospital Dragon Boat Festival at Chickamauga Dam, undaunted by the day's rain and cold temps. Fifty-one teams raced in authentic 41-foot-long Chinese boats to be named fastest team in the region.

Benefits: More than $230,000 was raised for Children's Hospital at Erlanger.

Winners: Team POPP Orthodontics won the gold medal, CBL Fit Motley Crew won the silver medal and Team Spirit Award, and CrossFit Brigade Sofa King won the bronze medal.

College students clean up Athens wetlands

What: Eleven Tennessee Wesley College students partnered with Education Angels, a service organization for education majors, to help with spring maintenance at the City Park wetlands area in Athens, Tenn.

Benefits: Activities included mulching and general clean-up to maintain the wetlands environment as an outdoor science learning area for students and teachers.
