The Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department put out a kitchen fire at 6818 Knoll Crest Drive on Wednesday night.
A family, whose identity has not been released, returned home about 7:20 p.m. and saw smoke billowing out the front, according to a news release. One of them called 911, and firefighters extinguished the fire in the kitchen.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is unknown, Lt. Casey Jones said, but it started in the kitchen.
The amount of damage has not been confirmed, but the family was insured, according to the release, and they will stay with other family members.
East Ridge Police have arrested a man accused of stealing pitching machines from the McBrien School building.
Police were investigating Christopher Meyer, 31, in relation to a stolen tiller in East Ridge. Their investigation led them to the discovery that Meyer may have pawned the stolen pitching machines.
Fort Oglethorpe police stopped Meyer on Wednesday for traffic offenses. He was taken into custody and interviewed, and he admitted stealing the tiller and the pitching machines, according to the release.
A local man is behind bars after an armed robbery spree in Chattanooga.
Detectives with the Chattanooga Police Department's robbery unit arrested Derrick Sean Starnes, 21, Wednesday, according to a news release.
Police said they believe Starnes robbed the Kangaroo Express on Ashland Terrace on May 8 and again on May 13. The same robber also hit another Kangaroo Express on May 10 and a Mapco on May 23, both on Highway 153, according to police.
At each location, the robber used a knife to threaten the clerks.
Starnes has been charged with four counts of aggravated robbery, according to police.
