Last year's Southern Brewer's Festival netted more than $173,000 for Kids on the Block, and given the quality of this year's lineup, promoter George Parker hopes to hand over an even bigger check. Also benefiting this year will the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.
Parker has helped book the acts for the festival for much of its 18-year run. Kids on the Block aims to educate children about special needs, disabilities, social concerns and more using puppetry.
"That it is benefiting a children's charity, you can't go wrong, and artists love it," he said. "The Kids on the Block people work very hard on this event, and they are a phenomenal partner, and they earn everything they get from this event."
David Sharpe, regional brewer with CraftWorks Restaurants & Breweries, has been involved with the festival since it began.
"We want to introduce people to new beers, so we needed to bring in new people and the music has done that," he said.
Yarn has been spinning its brand of Americana, or roots music, since 2007, and the band was nominated for a Grammy last year.
North Mississippi Allstars was founded in 1996 by brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson and Chris Chew. They have backed and toured with John Hiatt, and they joined Robert Randolph and John Medeski to form The Word. Luther Dickinson became a touring and recording member of The Black Crowes in 2007.
St. Paul and Broken Bones were on the first Scenic City Roots concert at Track 29 and wowed the crowd with their soulful sound.
If you like a little funk with your soul, pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph brings both. He was named to Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest guitarists of all time.
Galactic's musical style is a little harder to pin down. Their influences include hip-hop, electronic, world music, rock blues and jazz. Former Living Color frontman Corey Glover has been performing with them since last year.
