The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team took Samford to four sets Friday night in Birmingham but lost 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-14, 25-19) as Michaela Reesor downed 20 kills and Stephanie Palmer had 53 assists and 15 digs for the Bulldogs (16-10, 7-4). Kasey Talley had 10 kills and Briana Reid and Allie Davenport added eight and seven for UTC (4-22, 3-8), Reid matching Catherine Chason with 10 digs. Anne Bachmann had 27 assists and Melissa Green had 15 digs and three aces for the Mocs, who host Davidson at 2 p.m. Sunday in Maclellan Gym.

• Latrice Johnson had 16 kills and 11 digs Friday night in leading Lee University to a 3-0 Gulf South Conference volleyball win over Valdosta State in Cleveland. Paula Martins added 13 kills and Camil Martinez set 35 assists for Lee (12-6, 8-4) in the 25-16, 25-17, 25-13 sweep, while Libby Peigens had 17 digs and Deborah Magalhaes matched Johnson's 11. Jenna Kirkwood had 11 kills for Valdosta (16-10, 8-5).

• Rachel Harper from Boyd-Buchanan School had a match-high 15 kills plus 15 digs and Kristen Pickett from Cleveland High had a match-high 34 assists and nine digs in Carson-Newman's South Atlantic Conference volleyball match Friday night, but the Lady Eagles fell 3-1 (11-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19) to visiting Wingate and are 9-14 overall and 4-12 in the league. Wingate is 20-2, 16-0, and ranked ninth in NCAA Division II.

• Payton Tipton from Cleveland High led King University with 19 digs in the volleyball Tornado's 25-21, 14-25, 25-19, 25-17 victory Friday night at Limestone College. That made King 24-4, 13-1 in the Carolinas Conference.

Soccer

• Lee University swept a Gulf South Conference soccer doubleheader Friday evening against visiting Shorter, 2-0 in the men's game and 3-0 in the women's. Chevon Roberts assisted on both goals by the Flames (9-3-4, 8-2-4), three minutes apart by Jonathan Finlay and Eli Price midway through the second half. Lee outshot the Hawks (9-6-2, 8-5-1) 17-9, and Tom Halsall got the shutout without having to make a save. Leah Fortune scored in the 17th minute of the women's match from an assist by Ode Fulutudilu, and Summer Lanter had the other two Lady Flames goals with assists from Fortune and Kinsey Cichowitz. The Lady Flames (11-3-1, 8-1-1) had margins of 22-8 in shots and 10-2 in corner kicks.

• Covenant College senior goalkeeper Shuler Polk is a Capital One Academic all-district soccer player for NCAA Divison III. The balloting is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Polk has 77 saves and has allowed 20 goals in 19 games for the Scots, who host Averett in a USA South tournament quarterfinal tonight at 7. A biology major, he has a 3.72 grade point average.

Swimming

• Sewanee senior Astrid Escobar won the women's 50-yard breaststroke with teammate Chloe Stevenson second as the Sewanee Invitational swimming and diving meet got under way Friday in the Fowler Center. Sewanee had several other second-place swim finishes, including by freshmen Caty Hueske in the women's 50 backstroke and Mac McNally in the men's 100 individual medley, with teammate Evan Escobar fourth. Junior Brian Glatt was the 50 butterfly runner-up. Sewanee also finished second in the women's 100 medley relay and men's 100 freestyle relay. Sewanee men's divers Frazier Devaney and David Evans won the 1- and 3-meter events, respectively, and Grace Cobbs was the women's 3-meter runner-up with teammate Margaret Peterson second in both 1- and 3-meter.
