South Pittsburg City Administrator Sammy Burrows says his arrest by his own police department early Saturday involves "a little bit of an internal power struggle."

Burrows was booked into the Marion County Jail just before 1 a.m. Saturday on charges of obstruction of officer rights, resisting arrest, speeding and reckless driving, according to the intake report. South Pittsburg Police Sgt. Paul West was listed as the arresting officer.

No one was at the police department Saturday to provide a copy of the arrest report and no one answered the phone.

Burrows was ordered released on his own recognizance shortly after booking by Circuit Court Judge Thomas W. "Rusty" Graham, jail personnel said.

Burrows said Saturday, "I told my mayor and my council I did get a speeding ticket. I was speeding."

Mayor Jane Dawkins could not be reached for comment Saturday.

Burrows called the traffic stop "a routine pull-over" and said "there was no alcohol involved."

He said he couldn't discuss the pending case.

"There's a lot of things that have happened and there's a lot of people that don't like it and I got caught up in it, putting myself in a bad position. I have learned people will do what their power will let them and there's nothing you can do about that."

Burrows has a court date in January.
