A special election to fill the Georgia House of Representatives District 2 seat being vacated by Rep. Jay Neal, R-LaFayette, has been set for Jan. 7, 2014, a news release states.

Candidate qualifying for the election will be from Nov. 18 through Nov. 20, Secretary of State Brian Kemp said in the release.

Neal is resigning effective Friday to serve as executive director of the Governor's Office of Transition, Support and Re-Entry, a Georgia Department of Corrections post.

The website Peach Pundit has reported that longtime LaFayette Mayor Neal Florence, who's stepping down, is considering a run for the House seat.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Jan. 7 for the election. If needed, a runoff election will be Feb. 4.
