Chattanooga State sophomore pitcher Tyler Troutt was one of eight signees Wednesday for the Middle Tennessee State baseball program for 2014-15. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound left-hander from Alcoa went 7-3 in 13 starts as a Tigers freshman, with a 3.99 earned run average and 66 strikeouts in 76 2/3 innings. He received a scholarship offer also from Tennessee Tech and had substantial interest from Belmont and UNC-Asheville, and Chattanooga State coach Greg Dennis said he was "even on some bigger schools' radar. He really for the better part of the year was the most consistent pitcher for us last year, and he had a great fall and looks to be a solid No. 1 for us this spring." MTSU coach Jim McGuire said on the Blue Raiders' website that "Tyler is a player we have had our eyes on for a long time, going back to his high school days at Alcoa. He has continued to grow both physically and as a pitcher ... and now we feel he is one of the best juco arms in the state. He is going to throw a fastball in the mid to upper 80s and use a very good curveball and changeup to keep hitters off balance." As to why he picked Middle, Troutt said, "I really like all the coaches -- I like the pitching coach a lot -- and it was a really good atmosphere me, the baseball facilities and the school."
