An attorney in Monroe County, Tenn., has been publicly censured by the Tennessee Supreme Court.
Barry Keith Maxwell was disciplined for failing to promptly refund an advance payment of fees to a client when it became clear that the work for which he had been retained was unnecessary, according to a news release from the Board of Professional Responsibility.
The action violated the Rules of Professional Conduct related to terminating representation, the release stated.
A public censure is a rebuke and warning, but does not affect the attorney's ability to practice law, the release stated.
