Arts & Sciences' Brianna Taylor signed scholarship papers Wednesday to continue her softball career at NCAA Division II member Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn. Lady Patriots Gabi Queener and Brittany Patmon also signed letters of intent to play at NCAA Division III Maryville College. Taylor has shared pitching duties throughout most of her CSAS career and often played shortstop when current University of Tennessee at Chattanooga player Liana Rodrigues pitched. "You know an athlete when you see one and she's an athlete," CSAS coach Kaity Holloway said of Taylor. "Mentally, pitching-wise, I think we're going to see her do great things at Lincoln." Queener is working her way back from an ACL injury. "She's by far one of the best hitters we've had here," Holloway said. "Last year before her injury she was hitting over .600 and leading us in everything except home runs. She's working hard and I see great things in her future." Patmon has personified versatility throughout her prep career. "She's caught at times for us, played middle infield, first base, and we've tried her in the outfield," Holloway said. "I don't know if she can pitch, but if we needed her to, I'm sure she could. She has the attitude of, 'If this is what's needed of me, you're going to get my best.' She's stellar in the classroom. On and off the field she handles her business, and that's huge for any coach."

FOOTBALL

• Junior receiver Justin Houston from Bradley Central High School was one of the Tusculum College football players who made the All-South Atlantic Conference first team announced Wednesday. Houston led the SAC with 11 receptions per game, second most in NCAA Division II, and with 191.4 all-purpose yards per game and was second with 134.7 receiving yards per game. His 110 catches, 1,347 receiving yards and 1,914 all-purpose yards in 2013 are single-season Pioneers records, and he also set school records with 317 all-purpose yards against Brevard and a 99-yard kickoff return.

VOLLEYBALL/SOCCER

• King University junior libero Payton Tipton from Cleveland High School was the Conference Carolinas volleyball defensive player of the year for the second season in a row after leading the league in digs with 491 -- she led with 454 in 2012 -- and in aces with 83. King rose to 32-4 with a 3-1 semifinal win over Limestone in the conference playoffs Wednesday and will play Belmont Abbey on Saturday for the championship.

BASKETBALL

• Covenant swept visiting Sewanee in an NCAA Division III basketball doubleheader Wednesday, 61-40 in the women's game and 73-51 in the men's. Alexis Storteboom led the Lady Scots (2-1) with 14 points. Aleigha Williams added 10 points and Jessie Blankenship made eight steals. Savannah Rose's 10 points topped Sewanee (1-2) and Kayla Sewell, from Walker Valley, led with nine rebounds. Covenant's men (2-1) were led by Colton McGriff's 19 points and Micah Turner and Ben Phelps scored 10 apiece. Nate Frierson had six assists. Jorden Williams, from McCallie, had 23 points for Sewanee (2-1) and Leo Born, from Baylor, had 10. Keshonn Carter had a game-high 12 rebounds.

• Tennessee Wesleyan swept Reinhardt in AAC basketball Wednesday evening, the women winning 52-46 and the men winning 89-75. Armeka Booker paced the Lady Bulldogs (5-0, 2-0) with 26 points, Cody Houck added 13 and they each grabbed 15 rebounds. Former Dade County standout Erika Woodfin led Reinhardt (2-4, 0-1) with 19 points, including five 3-point goals. Tyler Burse's 27 points and 16 rebounds topped TWC's men (4-2, 2-0). Andrew Scofield scored 19 and had five of their 15 3-pointers. Shannon Smith had 16 points and nine assists for the Bulldogs and Dante Turnipseed chipped in with 15 points.

• Jamesha Mosley scored 16 points and Jara Gasper and Katrice Harris added 10 apiece as Cleveland State routed the Milligan junior varsity 71-31 in women's basketball Tuesday night at Milligan. The Lady Cougars take a 7-1 record into their TCCAA game at Motlow on Friday.
