Courter: Things I wish my kids would ask me

EDITOR'S NOTE: Barry Courter has a 24-year-old son who is a college graduate and a 19-year-old daughter who is a sophomore in college.

Q: Dad, it looks like I might need to find an apartment for the summer. I want to stay near campus, but not in a dorm. Where do I even start to look?

A: I'd say start early in the process so you aren't backed into a corner to make a quick decision. Ask around on campus, especially ask older students and maybe even a teacher's assistant or two. Ask co-workers, and definitely try social media. Also, make a list of things you want in an apartment. Start with budget. Proximity to campus and work are important. Find out which utilities you are responsible for and what the laundry situation is. Having to go off site to do laundry sounds quaint for about a minute.
