Former Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School standout Michelle Morgan of Salem College was voted the 2013 volleyball player of the year in the Great South Athletic Conference. The Spirits' senior middle blocker, a Chattanooga resident, led the GSAC in kills and kills per set this season, and her hitting percentage was second best. She was the team captain for Salem, which finished second in the GSAC tournament.
Swimming
• Queens University of Charlotte freshman Hannah Peiffer from Baylor School won the women's 100- and 200-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke events and helped in 200 and 400 medley relay victories in the Wingate Fall Frenzy swim meet this past weekend at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte. She was second to a teammate in the 200 individual medley. Queens finished third out of 12 women's teams, which included NCAA Division I members College of Charleston and Georgia Southern. The Hixson resident's winning times were 55.36 seconds in the 100 fly, 56.43 in the 100 back and 2:00.51 in the 200 fly. Her 200 win was by more than three seconds.
Basketball
• Amanda Rector scored 28 points and Angel Foster had 10 rebounds with 14 points, but their Tennessee Temple women's basketball team lost 68-65 at home Monday afternoon to Southeastern University from Florida. Rector shot 9-of-13 from the floor, including 3-of-4 on 3-pointers, and 7-of-8 on free throws. Also for Temple (0-6), which led by 10 points at halftime, Alexis McGhee grabbed eight rebounds and Kirsten Fowler had four steals. Southeastern (2-5) was balanced with 10 total scorers led by Rachel Turner with 13 points and Hannah Demarest and Abbi Wik with 11 each.
• Billy Aristide had 22 points and 13 rebounds and Michael Doolin scored 17 points as four-year school Crown College defeated the Georgia Northwestern two-year men's basketball team 75-63 Monday night at the Rossville Athletic Complex. Tavish Reynolds was 5-of-3 on 3-point shots and Devin Watkins matched his 15 points for the host Bobcats (3-3), who led at halftime, and Richard Olsen added 11 points. Freshman Dustin Stanley had nine points and eight rbounds off the bench for Georgia Northwestern.
Soccer
• The Premier Soccer Academy Rockets, a Red Bank-based club team formed in August, won the Under-16 Green boys' championship at the Triumph Cup 13 tournament this past weekend just outside Atlanta. The Rockets won 2-1 over the Georgia FC 98 Classic IV, tied the Lexington Football Club 98 Red 1-1, whipped the GOL Soccer Academy 98 Blue 4-0 and tied the Oconee Soccer Alliance 98 Red 0-0. The Rockets totaled eight points in the round robin, and Oconee 98 Red was next with six. Rockets players were Nurija Beganovic, Sandi Beganovic, Christian Bolano, Emerson Brock, Fernando Castro, Noah Cingilli, Esguer Hernandez, Edward Raji, Jonathan Ricketts, Jorge Romero, Kian Sandoval, Matthew Sheets, Jacob Stophel and Joshua Taylor. Their coach was Pedro Kozak, assisted by John Stophel.
