Man charged in Tennessee college robberies

JACKSON, Tenn. - Police say a man has been charged in the armed robberies of six Lane College students in Jackson.

Jackson police said Monday that 22-year-old Marcianno Brown has been charged with aggravated robbery and evading arrest.

Police said four students were robbed of money and cellphones by a man with a gun Nov. 19. Two students were robbed of cellphones and a laptop computer by an armed man inside the gymnasium two days later.

Officers who later arrested Brown recovered a backpack that contained the two stolen cellphones, the laptop and the handgun.


Driving records access now online

NASHVILLE - State officials are giving Tennessee residents an online option to access driving records.

The Department of Safety and Homeland Security announced this week that it has launched an online service that allows people to download or print copies of their official driving records by going to http://www.tn.gov/safety.

Officials hope the online option will reduce the wait time at driver services centers.

A $2 convenience fee will be assessed to each online transaction, in addition to the $5 state fee set by the Tennessee General Assembly for a copy of a driver record.


Homeless helper gets makeover

ATLANTA - Offers of cash, clothes and plenty of well wishes are pouring in after a homeless man turned in a wallet that had been stolen from a hotel guest in downtown Atlanta.

Joel Hartman also got a makeover in a salon at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center. The hotel is providing him with a room and meals this week.

Hotel General Manager Scott Stuckey tells WSB-TV that he's received calls and emails from all over North America and brought them to Hartman.

The hotel guest from France told police a man pushed her and grabbed her purse as she walked to her car Nov. 7. Later that day, Hartman came to the hotel and said he had found the wallet while looking for food in a nearby trash can.


Men found dead in parked car

BESSEMER, Ala. - Authorities in Jefferson County say the bodies of two men have been found in a vehicle parked at a hospital in Bessemer.

Deputy Coroner Phillip Russell said authorities were unsure of the cause of the men's death Tuesday, but investigators don't suspect foul play.

He told AL.com the men have been identified as 36-year-old Jeffery Olan Walker and 39-year-old Richard Shane Black.


Court to review sentence in rapes

ATHENS, Ala. - A state appeals court has agreed to review the sentence of a North Alabama man who avoided prison despite being convicted on three rape charges.

The Decatur Daily reports the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals will look at the case of 25-year-old Austin Clem.

Clem was convicted on three counts of rape in a series of sexual assaults going back years, but Limestone County Circuit Judge James Woodroof gave him a sentence that doesn't require time in prison.
