UTC women golfers lead Starmount by 10

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team set a 36-hole record for the program in taking the first-day lead Monday at the 15-team Starmount Fall Classic at Greensboro, N.C. Colette Murray's Mocs had back-to-back rounds of 5-over-par 289 at Starmount Forest Country Club and lead second-place Campbell by 10 strokes and Maryland by 12 with 18 holes to go. UTC's Agathe Sauzon is tied for second at 141, one shot off the lead, with Jordan Britt fourth at 142 and Emily McLennan fifth at 143; Isabella Loza is tied for 33rd at 152. "It was a good day. I'm proud of them and the way they ground it out today," Murray said in a school release. "We really executed our game plan."

• Led by Matt Emery's 142 and Hunter Vest's 143, Lee University is in third place after Monday's play in the 18-team Aflac/Cougar Invitational college golf tournament at the Country Club of Columbus (Ga.). Emery and Vest, who played at area high schools, are tied for third and eighth, and teammates Taylor Davis and Shea Sylvester also are in the top 30 at 146 and 147. At 576, the Flames are one stroke behind second-place West Florida; Columbus State leads at 563.

• Eight-time champion Maggie Scott of Charleston took the early lead with a 78 Monday in the 35th Tennessee Women's Senior Amateur golf tournament at Ridgeway Country Club in Germantown, and Cleveland's Linda Mullins is in a three-way tie for second at 81 in the 54-hole event. Another Chattanooga-area player, Debbie Durham, is fifth at 83, and 2009 and 2011 champion Georgia McCravey of Chattanooga is tied for eighth at 86. Defending champion Jean Roise of Crossville shares 11th place at 87.

• Sewanee's Jenna King and Emily Javadi finished second and fifth at 152 and 154 in the four-team Rhodes Collegiate Classic golf tournament Sunday and Monday, and Javadi's former Baylor School teammate at Centre, Alyssa Brown, tied for third at 153. Led by Nikki Isaacson's 148 and Jessica Zweifel's 153, Rhodes was the team champion at 617, six shots ahead of runner-up Centre. Javadi's 71 Sunday was the tournament's best round.

Football

• Furman University redshirt freshman linebacker T.J. Warren from Ooltewah High School made his first college start an award-winning one. Stepping in for an injured teammate, the 6-foot-2 Warren had seven solo tackles, including three for a total of 16 lost yards and a 9-yard sack, and was the Southern Conference football defensive player of the week. The Paladins held The Citadel to 132 rushing yards, 186 below the Bulldogs' season average.

Auto Racing

• Joey Carr from Chickamauga won the $1,500 top prize in the Super Pro class at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip on Saturday with a 5.89-second burst on a 5.89 dial in a 1973 Chevrolet Vega powered by a modified Chevy engine. Kevin Rodden of Cleveland was second in a 1972 Vega with a 5.91 run on a 5.90 dial, and Russ Hood was third in a 1976 Ford Mustang. Charles McRae of LaFayette won the Foot Brake class with a 9.51 run on a 9.50 dial in a Mustang convertible, with Steven Holloway from Tunnel Hill second in a 1966 Plymouth Belvedere. Abby Fisk, a 14-year-old from Maryville, won $1,000 in the Junior Dragster class in a 1-cylinder Briggs & Stratten dragster with a 7.93 run on a 7.93 dial, edging Ooltewah's Jake Clayton. Cynthia Warnock had the low elapsed time (4.54 seconds) and top speed (153.20 mph) of the meet. The strip will be closed for 10 days for the installation of a concrete track.

Soccer/Field Hockey

• Sewanee's Ford Emerson was the Southern Athletic Association men's soccer offensive player of the week, and the school's Karen Dawson was the SAA field hockey offensive player of the week for her three goals and an assist in Sunday's 6-2 win over Hendrix. Emerson had two goals in a 4-1 defeat of Emory & Henry, and he shares the league lead with seven goals.

Running

• Covenant College juniors Beth Burgess and Stephen Dillon were the USA South cross country runners of the week for leading their teams to the top finishes of the NCAA Division III schools that were entered in the Greensboro Invitational meet. Burgess was eighth overall out of 86 women in a personal-best time of 19 minutes, 57 seconds for the 5-kilometer course; Dillon was 20th out of 84 male runners with a 28:29 for 8 kilometers.
