Man kills self as trailer searched

Sheriff's officials say a man who was suspected in the disappearance of a DeKalb County, Ala., woman killed himself while deputies were searching his mobile home.

Cherokee County sheriff's Lt. Jay Baker says deputies were searching 22-year-old Max Zeller's mobile home in Canton on Tuesday morning after authorities in DeKalb County notified them that he was sought in the disappearance of his 54-year-old aunt, Felicia Lindsey, whose car was found near his trailer.

When deputies were searching the home, Baker says, Zeller ran to a bedroom and deputies heard a gunshot. Baker says deputies entered the room and saw that Zeller had shot himself in the mouth. He later was pronounced dead.

Baker says authorities found Lindsey dead in Alabama, and Zeller had a warrant for failure to pay child support.

Falcons stadium site selected

The Atlanta Falcons officially have chosen a site directly south of the Georgia Dome as the spot where the team's new $1 billion stadium will be built.

City officials said Monday that the retractable-roof stadium will be built on the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Northside Drive.

The announcement comes after congregations at two historic churches voted to accept tens of millions of dollars from the Georgia World Congress Center Authority and the franchise to relocate so the stadium could be built on their land.

The Falcons hope to open the stadium in time for the 2017 season. The roughly 21-year-old Georgia Dome will be demolished.

17 rifles stolen from Bass Pro Shop

Authorities are investigating the thefts of 17 rifles from a Bass Pro Shop in Macon.

Bibb County sheriff's officials say four men broke through a glass door at the outdoor store around 11:40 p.m. Sunday, then headed to the gun area. The Telegraph of Macon reports that the thieves used a crowbar to pry open the metal bars that secured the weapons.

Cara Cotton, director of strategic management for the Bibb County Sheriff's Office, said 17 AR-15 semi-automatic rifles were stolen.

Sheriff David Davis tells WMAZ-TV that the men were in the store for only about 2 to 5 minutes and had fled before deputies arrived.

Details emerge on guns in schools

Under a plan being discussed by a Northeast Georgia school district, Colt 6920 M4 carbine rifles would be stored in safes inside schools to defend students in a school shooting.

The weapons -- one for each school -- would be locked in the vehicles of school resource officers when schools aren't in session.

Details of the plan by Gainesville City Schools were discussed Monday as parents and teachers met with city police.

The Times of Gainesville reports the safes would be accessible by fingerprint recognition, and only the school's resource officer would have access to the rifle.

Gainesville police had approached the schools about the idea in April, shortly after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut.

The plan still needs approval by the school board.
