Georgia senior golfer Keith Mitchell from Chattanooga and Baylor School shot a 7-under-par 65 for the first-round lead Friday of the Brickyard Collegiate Championship at Macon, Ga., but his scores are not counting this weekend for the No. 1-ranked Bulldogs. Another former Baylor standout at Georgia, current PGA Tour player Harris English, was the Brickyard medalist in 2007. Georgia is sixth at 291, nine shots behind first-place Georgia Tech, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is 11th at 300 in the 14-team field. The Mocs' Ewan Scott is tied for 27th individually at 73, with Chris Robb at 75 and Davis Bunn and Wes Gosselin at 76.
• Defending champion David Noll Jr. of Dalton won twice Friday to reach the quarterfinals of the 95th Atlanta Amateur Match Play tournament at Rivermont Golf and Country Club in Johns Creek, Ga., but he needed five extra holes to get past Mitch Kim of Peachtree Corners in the round of 16. Noll, who did not have to go through stroke-play qualifying, edged Danny Nelson of Savannah 1 up in the morning round. Reigning Georgia Senior champion Jack Hall of Sea Island will challenge Noll this morning. The semifinals will be played this afternoon.
Baseball
• Lee University senior baseball pitcher Jeremy Bales of Chattanooga is the 2013 recipient of the newly created Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Jeff Byrd Memorial Scholarship. Byrd was a successful businessman and community leader, and the scholarship is awarded to a Tennessee college junior or senior with an interest in sports journalism or sports management who displays character, leadership and integrity in sports, the classroom and the community, according to the announcement release. Bales is nearing a degree in physical education with a religion and coaching minor, and he has been a Teaching Academy Award winner for his student teaching in area elementary and middle schools. He has been involved in World Missions and orphanage ministries through his church, Redemption Point Church of God, and last December went on a mission trip with his Lee teammates. During his junior year he was chosen by the Lee administration to give a speech at the annual Junior Achievement banquet.
Volleyball
• Lauren Gray had 17 kills and Paige Brown had 44 assists and 11 digs as Appalachian State defeated UTC 3-1 in Southern Conference volleyball Friday night at Maclellan Gym. The Mountaineers (10-7, 1-2) lost the first set 27-25 but then won 25-20, 25-11, 25-15. Allie Davenport had seven kills and 10 digs, Briana Reid and Melissa Green had 21 and 20 digs and Catherine Chason and Anne Bachman had 12 and 10 assists with 10 and 11 digs for the Mocs (2-16, 1-2).
• Bryan College improved to 20-1 overall, 10-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, with a 3-1 win (22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-18) Friday night at Columbia (S.C.) College. Taylor Fink had 40 assists, Kara Stamper and Chelsea Breaden had 14 and 13 kills and Corrie Walker had 24 digs for Bryan, which got eight kills and three block solos from Ashley Ferris.
• The Lee University volleyball team won 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-18) in a Gulf South Conference match Friday night at Union University, as Sarah Davis filling in at setter with 16 assists and Becky Bourne adding 12. Lauren Williams and Patty Orozco had nine kills each for Lee (6-3, 3-2), while Paula Martins, Libby Peigen and Latrice Johnson had 14, 13 and 11 digs.
• Kristen Pickett from Cleveland High School had 48 assists and fellow junior Rachel Harper from Boyd-Buchanan had 21 kills to lead Carson-Newman (8-6, 3-4) to a 3-1 South Atlantic Conference volleyball victory Friday against visiting Catawba.
Soccer
• Lee University and Shorter played to a scoreless tie despite overtime in GSC men's soccer Friday night in Rome, Ga. Each team had 14 shots. Tom Halsall made five saves for Lee (3-3-2). The Hawks are 5-2-2.
