Western Carolina tops UTC in volleyball

Kendall Sexton had 10 kills with a .529 attack percentage for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team Saturday afternoon, but visiting Western Carolina won the Southern Conference match 3-0 with set scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-21.

Addy George had 11 kills, Cristina Nazario set 25 assists and Morgan Cochran had 17 digs for WCU (14-4, 4-0). Briana Reid had eight kills with 17 digs and Sarah Batterton added seven kills for UTC's Mocs (2-17, 1-3), while Anne Bachmann and Catherine Chason had 18 and 13 assists and Melissa Green also had 17 digs.

"We saw some positive play out of our team despite the loss," Mocs coach Travis Filar said in a school release. "We played Western Carolina very tightly today. We know we're just on the edge of where we want to be."

• At Memphis, Alexis Gillis had 21 kills and Jessica Reber had 46 assists as Christian Brothers beat Lee University 3-0 in Gulf South Conference volleyball (25-13, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20). Paula Martins had 11 kills and Lauren Williams and Latrice Johnson had 10 each for Lee (6-4, 3-3), while Becky Bourne had 29 assists and Sarah Davis and Libby Peigen contributed 12 and 11 digs. Johnson and Patty Orozco served four and three aces.

• At Laurinburg, N.C., Bryan College continued to roll through the Appalachian Athletic Conference with a 25-10, 25-10, 25-18 breeze past St. Andrews. Kara Stamper had nine kills and Chelsea Breaden and Meghan Lowry added eight and seven for the winning Lady Lions (21-1, 11-0), while Taylor Fink had 32 assists and Corrie Walker had 10 digs.

• At Sewanee, Kayla Sewell had 19 kills and 15 digs as the host Tigers edged Hendrix 3-2 in Southern Athletic Association play. Jamie Sue Wilson had 12 kills, Walker Buxton and Rachel Schuman provided 21 and 20 assists and Jamie Kosman had 12 digs for Sewanee (11-6, 2-4) in the 25-20, 25-16, 22-25, 14-25, 15-13 marathon.

• At Jefferson City, Tenn., Chattanooga-area graduates Rachel Harper and Kristen Pickett led Carson-Newman with 21 kills and 45 assists, respectively, adding 11 and 10 digs, but the Lady Eagles lost 3-2 (23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-13) to Queens of Charlotte. That left CNU 8-7, 3-5 in the South Atlantic Conference.

Lady Flames roll

Summer Lanter scored in the 15th minute and later joined Alison Braun in assisting Danielle Ciabattone for a close-range goal as Lee University nationally ranked Valdosta State 3-0 in Gulf South women's soccer Saturday in Cleveland.

Laura Thacker volleyed a Leah Fortune pass into the net nearly two minutes into the second half to give the Lady Flames (6-2) a 2-0 lead, and they continued dominating the game. Haley Gribler needed only three saves for the shutout, while Olivia Mills made 10 for Valdosta (5-1-3).

• Columbia (w) 6, Bryan 0: At Columbia, S.C., the hosts dominated the AAC match with four goals in the first 21 minutes, the first three of which were assisted by Ashley Tanner. She added a fourth assist and Jessica Martinez scored the last four goals for Columbia (10-3, 4-3). Stephanie Gagnon made 16 saves for Bryan (4-5-1, 0-4-1).

• Oglethorpe 5, Sewanee 2: At Sewanee, five players scored for the visiting Stormy Petrels, who opened SAA play with a 3-0 halftime lead and rose to 5-2-1 overall. William White scored from a Ford Emerson assist early in the second half for the Tigers (5-4-2), and Reed Dowdy scored unassisted at 88:23. Holden Foster made eight saves in defeat.

• Sewanee (w) 8, Oglethorpe 0: At Sewanee, freshman Shelby Meckstroth scored three goals and Olivia O'Brien netted two plus an assist in the Tigers' SAA-opening win, making them 8-1-1 overall. Katie Morrison had four assists for Sewanee, and Jamie Samociuk, Tyler Edell and Emily Driver had the other goals. Oglethorpe is 5-4.
