Son convicted of killing parents dies in Alabama prison

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A man has died in an Alabama prison while serving a sentence of life without parole for killing his prominent parents in their Montgomery home.

Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett says Winston Brent Springford Jr. died Sunday at the Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham.

He was taken to the hospital Saturday after being found unresponsive in his cell at Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer. Corbett says an autopsy will be done to determine Springford's cause of death, but foul play is not suspected.

Springford was convicted of capital murder in 2008 for the beating and stabbing deaths of his parents, Brent and Charlotte Springford, on Thanksgiving Day in 2004.

Prosecutors have said Springford rode a bus from his home in Greeley, Colo., after his parents threatened to cut his financial support.
