Old-Timey Avant-Garde Series at Barking Legs - Oct. 11-13

Thursday, October 10, 2013

Flying Fingers Productions and the Shaking Ray Levi Society will continue the monthlong Old-Timey Avant-Garde Series with a Dennis Palmer birthday weekend celebration at Barking Legs Theater, 1307 Dodds Ave.

Set to perform are Konk Pack on Friday, Oct. 11, and Nief-Norf Project on Saturday, Oct. 12. Both shows start at 8 p.m., and each has a $10 ticket.

A third event, Dennis Palmer Date Night Movies, is at 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, with free admission.

Konk Pack, described by The Wire magazine as "one of the most exciting improv groups in the world," brings together three major figures in contemporary music: Tim Hodgkinson (lap steel, clarinet), Thomas Lehn (analog synthesizers) and Roger Turner (percussion).

Nief-Norf Project is a contemporary music ensemble with a flexible roster of musicians who perform works from both the historical and emerging avant garde. Saturday, the musicians will perform Michael Gordon's percussive work "Timber," scored for six graduated wooden simantras, an Eastern Orthodox percussion instrument. Chattanooga is the first stop on a seven-city tour.

The Dennis Palmer Date Night Movies night is a tribute to the late Shaking Ray Levis founder by friend Tom Landis. The evening of classic experimental cinema will include pieces on Salvador Dalí, Luis Buñuel and Peyton Farquha, as well as feature "Paradise Garden," a new short film from Lee Shook that has Palmer acting as tour guide through folk artist Howard Finster's visionary installation in North Georgia

The series winds down next week with improv duo The Home of Easy Credit.
