The Mime

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

so let me see if I got this, its the ceiling that is crushing the mime and not the 17 trillion in actual debt and 126 trillion in unfunded liabilities. typical perverted liberal view that would think the inability to raise the debt ceiling is more dangerous to the economy than the actual debt itself.

what is the debt to gdp ratio that you liberals would be willing to stop the ceiling at? is it 110%, 120%, 130%, 140%? what is the ratio that you run your home budget on?

ALL HAIL THE AMERICAN TALIBAN

Congratulations tea baggers! You guys are always droning on and on about how much you hate government, hate Obama, hate democrats, and hate anyone who disagrees with you.

Praise god.

But I don't understand why you tea baggers try to act so innocent. Why don't you stand on the Capitol steps and scream your full-throated political opposition? Why don't you try to sway the rest of us?

Instead you blame partisan bickering on Reid or Obama or Pelosi or the media. You point to the President's lack of leadership, but starting the night of his Inauguration you tea baggers did everything possible to block his agenda and destroy his presidency.

Praise god.

And to that 'enlightened' way of thinking burning down Washington is savvy political strategy. Fine, but from now on the tea party should be called the American Taliban.

Praise god.

We're still paying off the biggest heist of the American taxpayer ever -- the Ronald Reagan Savings and Loan scam. GWB never bothered to put his unfunded tax cuts for the wealthy, unfunded Medicare Part D, nor his two unfunded unholy wars on the budget, just the credit card. I'm so sick of hearing these teabillies complain about the deficit spending now that there's a black president in the White House. At least you go without your hoods these days. You keep up this apple and oranges fallacy of a household budget. I have never had some criminal (Reagan/Bush) steal my credit card and rack up unwarranted purchases on it, that I am then expected to pay, when now, I don't have enough money.

1) Liberals are relativists and hate Christians because Christians believe in absolute truth.

2) Liberals do not want anyone to say that immorality is immoral.

3) Liberals are selfish and are more interested in their "feelings" then they are with what is right for others.

4) Liberals misunderstand what Christians really believe and are threatened because they are guided by another governing body other than government.

5) Since liberals believe the lie they are the superior enlighten ones they do not recognize that taking a position against their position is not automatically hate.

6) Liberals do not want to listen to what makes sense, they would rather listen to their senses.

7) Liberals ignore the clear evidence of the result of their philosophical positions influence on the last 40 years. It had been a social disaster and they do not want to hear it.

8) They see Christians as intellectually inferior when actually Christians have a more intellectual ability to understand and process more efficiently..

9) Liberals see Christians as wanting to impose their religion on them when in truth it is the liberals who have used the courts system to impose their secular humanism immoral religion on all of us.

10) Liberals are spiritually lost and blind to the truth of God and think there is no greater power on earth than man.

conservative, that may be the biggest lie I've ever read about the S&L, it's well documented -- go read up on it. I paid taxes in the top bracket for 50 years and my husband for 55 years. I never asked for or wanted Bush's give away to Big Pharma, aka Medicare Part D. So, get you some facts before you blow your credibility on this board. Oh wait, too late for that.

Conservative,

You should no better than to expect liberals to acknowledge fact. Especially the facts that do not make them feel good. Take a look at inaqueeringmind's post yesterday. He is all for giving free stuff to people who just say they need it without any idea of how to pay for it. These liberals think runaway debt is good as long as it is doing something to make them feel good. They have no concept of the impending consequences of their actions. Have you ever heard a liberal say how much debt is to much debt? You never will. Have you ever heard a liberal say they are against a tax increase? These liberals actually think giving irresponsible people more money is doing them good. They have no idea of the concept of enabling people. The liberals thnk feeding bears is a good thing because it makes them feel good. They do not understand the fact when they stop feeding the bear it will maul them because they have made the bear feel entitled to more of what the bear wants.

Welfare to drug addicts is the largest contributor to the drug problem in America. A liberal will never admit this because it does not make them feel good.

Quote from Dick Cheney: "Ronald Reagan taught us that deficits don't matter."

America's debt is like a ping-pong ball. When one side of the political aisle is out of power, it's the other side's problem. When the other side is out of power, the argument flips.

I distinctly remember the debts incurred during the Reagan and GW Bush administrations, and, after working to balance long term debt during the Clinton administration, GW Bush tripled the debt with two wars that weren't paid for and a Medicare bill that wasn't funded. Like many people, I was upset by the rising debt, and often mentioned it to my conservative friends, all of whom quoted Dick Cheney.

As soon as Obama was sworn into office, conservatives wanted an "Adult conversation about the deficit." Really? Really?

Back to the wars, for the first time in our country's history, we went to war without a war tax ... a tax that has always been used to pay for all the thing necessary to wage war. The taxes remained high after WWII because of the extreme amount of money required to fight wars in two theaters of operation, finance and produce weapons/munitions for the Russians, UK, Free French, Free Poles etc etc and the reconstruction of Germany/Europe and Japan.

Yes, deficits have increased during the Obama administration, a good portion of it the interest on the debt from the GW administration and the continuation of the wars. At the same time, through the sequester and other cuts, the deficit is rolling back at a much quicker rate than expected.

I am neither a Democrat or Republican. I vote for the candidate. As far as I'm concerned, both parties and the cable networks supporting them are nothing more than a reality version of George Orwell's hate week. Or as Buffalo Springfield sang in their song "For What It's Worth": Nobody's right if everybody's wrong."

If Repubs are in doubt of the impact of a debt default and government shutdown they should watch what happens in the Virgina Governor's race. If Terry McAuliffe wins by a wide margin then it's over for the Repubs for quite some time to come. His opponent is a staunch teabagger. Repubs will wander in the desert for the next three national elections losing the White House in 2016 and control of Congress for (at the very least) the next 10 years.

Repubs can thank the teabaggers for their losses and the members of the Republican Party who didn't have the guts to stand up to the teabaggers when it counted most. Instead they caved in to their petty demands, allowed their party to be hijacked by a bunch of losers and lost touch with the majority of the American people.

Teabaggers thought they would take President Obama down but instead President Obama's theme song should be Katy Perry's song Roar because the lyrics definitely fit him and his battle against the teabaggers: LOL

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar Louder, louder than a lion Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar Oh oh oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh oh oh You’re gonna hear me roar

Looks like McCain and Graham (the two amigos) say they went too far, this battle is lost. Maybe they can prevail on the rest of the Repubs to see the teabaggers for what they really are: a bunch of losers.

"McCain: 'Republicans Have To Understand We Have Lost This Battle' With the government shutdown in its third week and the United States dangerously close to the debt limit, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) urged members of his party on Tuesday to stop digging.

“It’s very, very serious,” McCain said, as quoted by the New York Times. “Republicans have to understand we have lost this battle, as I predicted weeks ago, that we would not be able to win because we were demanding something that was not achievable.”

Efforts to raise the debt ceiling and reopen the shuttered government unraveled on Tuesday, with House Speake John Boehner's (R-OH) proposals shot down by his conservative caucus. The budget and debt crises were brought about by a conservative campaign to gut the Affordable Care Act, a movement that McCain and other veteran Republicans decried as quixotic. In an interview last week with Fox News, McCain said repeatedly that Republicans are to blame for the shutdown. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), McCain's longtime confidant, also acknowledged Tuesday that Republicans "really did go too far" but beseeched Democrats to cut them some slack."

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/mccain-republicans-have-to-understand-we-have-lost-this-battle

Boehner is ready to put the Senate Bill on the floor of the House for a vote. Maybe he finally listened to his colleagues like McCain and Graham in the senate than those teabaggers in his house. You got to know when to hold'em and when to fold'em.

"10:00 a.m.: Boehner Relents, Will Rely on Dem Votes to Pass:

The National Review's Robert Costa, who has had his finger on the GOP pulse better than most during this crisis, reports that John Boehner has agreed to allow the Senate plan—once its finalized—to pass the lower chamber with the help of Democratic votes."

Obama and the Democrats won big today. Ted Cruz and his cohorts lost just as soundly. I predict that Booker will win the special election this evening by a wide margin, allowing the nation to get a glimpse of things to come for those who align themselves with the Tea Party.

ObamaCare will go forward, almost totally unmolested. The Government will reopen. The Debt ceiling will be lifted.

Moving forward, if Republicans desire to retain an iota of power by next November, they will drop this incessant hatred for the President and will learn to move towards the middle of the political spectrum in any future negotiations.

As for certain members of this forum, your vitriol towards others is about your inner frustrations and about your inability to be able to deal with the fact that the course that this country is on, is totally out of your hands.

I took your numbers and updated them to 2013 level to account for inflation and they are in parentheses. The totals and yearly average deficits are in brackets. Sure looks like Obama is absolutely leading the pack in rolling up debt.

Ronald Reagan: Took office January 1981. Total debt: $848 ($2,182) billion Left office January 1989. Total debt: $2,698 ($5,089) billion Percent change in total debt: +218%

[$2,907 billion / 8 yrs = $363 billion/yr.]

George H.W. Bush: Took office January 1989. Total debt: $2,698 ($5,089) billion Left office 20 January 1993. Total debt: $4,188 ($6,778) billion Percent change in total debt: +55%

[$1,689 billion / 4 yrs = $422 billion/yr.]

Bill Clinton: Took office 20 January 1993. Total debt: $4,188 ($6,778) billion Left office 20 January 2001. Total debt: $5,728 ($7,569) billion Percent change in total debt: +37%

[$791 billion / 8 yrs = $99 billion/yr.]

George W. Bush: Took office 20 January 2001. Total debt: $5,728 ($7,569) billion Left office 20 January 2009. Total debt: $10,627 ($11,585) billion Percent change in total debt: +86%

[$4,016 billion / 8 yrs = $502 billion/yr.]

Barack Obama: Took office 20 January 2009. Total debt: $10,627 ($11,585) billion Total debt (as of the end of today 10/15/13): $16,755 billion Percent change in total debt:

[$5,170 billion / 4.75 = $1,088 billion / yr]

Obamacare is the law and it will rise or fall on its own merits. From here it looks like the House had 42 chances to pass any bill that might improve the health care law and decided 42 times to make TV ads for their own re-election campaigns instead.

Every member of the House should face primary challengers every election - and from both the left and the right. Why should someone be re-elected who can't explain their views in a primary?

So you and your husband were both making over $400,000 in income when you entered the labor market in about 1960. That would only be $3.16 million each in 2013 dollars so how were the two of you to manage on such a small amount? It looks like you may have got that $500/hr rate from some other presidents as well. Quote from Dick Cheney: "Ronald Reagan taught us that deficits don't matter."

Any context?.... Deficits during R.R.’s era mattered less than they do now as they were half what they are now and they were structured in a way that they produced economic growth versus the current continuing malaise.

I distinctly remember the debts incurred during the Reagan and GW Bush administrations, and, after working to balance long term debt during the Clinton administration, GW Bush tripled the debt with two wars that weren't paid for and a Medicare bill that wasn't funded.

Got proof? ... Or is this just more Fleabagger talking points .. Oh wait!! ... your non partisan ... Right?

Like many people, I was upset by the rising debt

How upset are you with Obama’s $1 trillion per year deficits that adds to that debt ....Note: this is where you state it wasn’t his fault ... Right

As soon as Obama was sworn into office, conservatives wanted an "Adult conversation about the deficit." Really? Really?

Well that has never happened to any previous president? No out of power party has planned to unseat the party in power as soon as the previous election was over? .... Really?

Back to the wars, for the first time in our country's history, we went to war without a war tax.

Wonder why the Democrats continued the tax cuts when they gained control of both houses of Congress and the Presidency?

through the sequester and other cuts, the deficit is rolling back at a much quicker rate than expected.

Passed by the Republicans but when you start from the stratospheric levels Obama drove them it takes a lot of cuts to even make a dent. However they are still almost double those of his recent predecessors.

I am neither a Democrat or Republican... Right!

In 1964 the Republicans took a bad defeat but its Goldwater conservative wing was energized and purged the party of many “Rockefeller” Republicans. This produced the Reagan revolution in 1978-80 and the capturing the Senate in 1994 as well as the House after 50 years of Democrat control. The Tea Party is the newest conservative insurgency starting in 2008-10. They have been in the process of purging the likes of McCain, Graham, and other RINO’s. It won’t happen overnight and there will be missteps. He is going to be a heavy drag on Democrat candidates in the 2014 mid terms where the incumbent party usually loses big especially for the second term.

The Latest In Stealing From the American People: The Treasury Department once again is taking federal retirement programs to buy the government more time to increase the nation's debt ceiling. And why does the government need to raise the debt ceiling? The debt ceiling must be raised for two reasons, (1) in order to fund the banker-inspired wars of occupation and, (2) to continue to fund the largest wealth transfer in history, the bailouts. And just who is behind this nonsense? The very close friends of Goldman Sachs over at Citigroup and they have their henchman in charge of the continuing rape of America by Wall Street, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew. Let me be clear, and Lew you can sue me if this not true, that it is a fact that Obama appointed one of the criminals who had a major hand in bringing down the economy to run the country's finances.

While at Citigroup, Lew oversaw 113 tax evading accounts in Cayman Island banks. Based upon Lew's resume, hedge funds for Citigroup where he lost almost 600 million dollars, one can only assume that is why Obama has appointed Lew to finish the job which will leave you and I with nothing.

Dems Target Private Retirement Accounts

Democratic leaders in the U.S. House discuss confiscating 401(k)s, IRAs

By Karen McMahan

November 04, 2008

RALEIGH — Democrats in the U.S. House have been conducting hearings on proposals to confiscate workers’ personal retirement accounts — including 401(k)s and IRAs — and convert them to accounts managed by the Social Security Administration.

Triggered by the financial crisis the past two months, the hearings reportedly were meant to stem losses incurred by many workers and retirees whose 401(k) and IRA balances have been shrinking rapidly.

The testimony of Teresa Ghilarducci, professor of economic policy analysis at the New School for Social Research in New York, in hearings Oct. 7 drew the most attention and criticism. Testifying for the House Committee on Education and Labor, Ghilarducci proposed that the government eliminate tax breaks for 401(k) and similar retirement accounts, such as IRAs, and confiscate workers’ retirement plan accounts and convert them to universal Guaranteed Retirement Accounts (GRAs) managed by the Social Security Administration.

Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor, in prepared remarks for the hearing on “The Impact of the Financial Crisis on Workers’ Retirement Security,” blamed Wall Street for the financial crisis and said his committee will “strengthen and protect Americans’ 401(k)s, pensions, and other retirement plans” and the “Democratic Congress will continue to conduct this much-needed oversight on behalf of the American people.”

Currently, 401(k) plans allow Americans to invest pretax money and their employers match up to a defined percentage, which not only increases workers’ retirement savings but also reduces their annual income tax. The balances are fully inheritable, subject to income tax, meaning workers pass on their wealth to their heirs, unlike Social Security. Even when they leave an employer and go to one that doesn’t offer a 401(k) or pension, workers can transfer their balances to a qualified IRA.

I'm sure you are not confused. You have your opinion like most people, but I will offer this;

The President recently stated, "The debt ceiling is not a question of authorizing more spending. Raising the debt ceiling does not authorize more spending. It simply allows the country to pay for spending that Congress has already committed to."

He also stated that he is very willing to have a conversation about reducing the deficit, but the debt limit was not the right vehicle.

People can sit around and blame the President for this and that, but when it comes to spending, Congress holds all the purse strings.

A President can pledge this and that, but Congress approves or denies those pledges.

Back when Senator Obama gave a floor speech about his intention to not vote to raise the debt ceiling, and blaming GWB for spending, he was making a political statement, which every politician is guilty of doing many times throughout their political careers.

He was just as wrong as many Republican politicians were over the past few weeks to attempt to hold the nation's debt ceiling hostage to get what it was that they wanted.

I would like to think that going forward, our leaders, including the President, will attempt to negotiate for the good of all our nation, but I am not about to hold my breath.

Absolutely on target volsam, but here's the thing.

Republicans were elected in a landslide in 2010 on a platform that they created, claiming that they were going to get this country back to work.

Revenue climbs when people are making enough that they pay taxes.

For nearly four years, the Republicans have been sitting on their hands doing nothing about jobs, and have been passing bill after bill trying to prevent ObamaCare from coming to pass, anti-abortion bills, trying to cut the lifeline to those who depend on Social Security and Medicare, and little else.

They have pulled stunt after stunt, halting practically any hope of progress on that which ails this nation.

What are these clowns going to run on when it comes time for reelection?

"I stood up against ObamaCare" is not going to get them reelected.

This nation has a very bad taste in their mouths when the word "Tea Party" is mentioned. That is going to get worse.

Centrist Republicans are going to be the only ones standing within the next two election cycles.

Wanna scare somebody about America's debt? All ya' gotta do is raise the issue about "unfunded liabilities."

The U.S. national debt is about $16 trillion today. But it's nothing compared to the estimated $126 trillion in unfunded liabilities to Social Security, Medicare, and federal pensions. Right?

If you add up all of the U.S. government's promises to pay retirement and health care benefits for the next 75 years and subtract the projected tax revenue dedicated to those programs over the next 75 years, there is a gap. A $126 trillion gap.

That's not our debt. Our $16 trillion in debt and our $126 trillion in "unfunded liabilities" represent two very different things: real, past promises and projected future promises.

Real past money that has been spent is very real. We will eventually have to pay that debt.

Unfunded liabilities are future promises, and, since they're not yet real, those promises can be changed.

For example, raising the taxable income ceiling and slowing the growth of benefits could reduce the Social Security gap to zero practically overnight.

75-year projections are scarier than they are informative. In 75 years, our economy will likely be massive. Growing at a conservative 2% annual average, our GDP could be $66 trillion in today's dollars come year 2088.

When Republicans say unfunded liabilities come out to $1,000,000 per U.S. household, they're taking a figure from 2088 and dividing it over a 2013 population to exaggerate. Scary, to be sure, but not very informative.

So panic if you must about unfunded liabilities, but your having a panic attack over something that is not real and something that will not be close to reality if you live so long.

Trust me, when the Gov't spends another $50 billion, I'll be sure to update my numbers.

degage, you really need to learn to hold the people responsible for massive spending, and it is never a President who does it.

The nearly $17 trillion that has been spent is the responsibility of the Congress. They vote for and approve every dollar spent.

And given that the current Republican sweetheart of the Senate who saved the House Republicans from a total face-egging, who also just cut a deal to bring nearly $3 billion in borrowed funds to his home state as a means by which to attempt to save his plunging poll numbers, I find any accusation of an over-spending President to be rather innocuous.

Not one President has ever served this country and spent a dime without the approval and endorsement by Congress.

All this hoopla about "entitlements" needing to be curtailed, pales in comparison to the waste and abuse of pork barrel spending that each and every member of Congress is likely guilty of hording for themselves, as a means by which to shore up voting bases.

The day that I see a Republican politician whine about pork barrel spending, who has not been guilty of receiving a little bacon for his own district, I say there might be such a things as an honest politician.

joneses, I have my suspicions that you are not being entirely forthcoming about all that you relate.

You've identified yourself as a small business owner in the past, and I assure you that you would be money ahead to provide health care to your employees.

The tax credit alone, per employee, combined with the deductions make it profitable to provide health care insurance to your employees.

If you are truly a business owner, you owe it to yourself to seek out those deductions and tax credits being offered come January 1, 2014.

A tax credit alone that will be rising from a maximum of 35% today to a maximum of 50% toward the premiums, that is going to kick in January 1, 2014 can mean quite a lot to a business owner who desires to keep a staff of good workers.

If you are indeed being honest, and if you treat your employees like you treat most people in this forum, I shudder to think about the kind of people that you have to deal with on a daily basis.

I can't imagine working for someone like you, no matter how badly I might need a job.

Ma'am, I have only one bone to pick with GWB, and that is his dishonesty that led this nation to invade two sovereign nations that had nothing to do with 9/11.

In that respect, I do blame him for massively increasing military spending that was not in defense of this nation.

Teabagger means a member of the Tea Party for me it has no connotation as far as I'm concerned for "gay slang" as you put it. Maybe the Right Wing Nut Jobs should have chosen another name for their Party if they were worried about some sort of "gay slang" connection being as most of the teabaggers are homophobes to begin with.

As for President Obama's saying he loved this plane in reference to Air Force One so what? Who wouldn't love a plane equipped like that? Today, most major airlines that offer long flights overseas now equip their planes with luxury first class sections that allow the ticketholders to have their own private compartments. Yeah, President Obama just might be taking off to go around the country but it's part of his job to get out of Washington, D.C. to meet the REAL citizens of this country and not just lock himself away on Pennsylvania Ave waiting on the next attack from the teabaggers.

Uh huh...

"More proof alpos is not informed."

Mow THAT is a relatively true statement. Since I had not visited the debt clock in awhile, I was not aware that we were so close to tripping another trillion in debt, but it is a fact that we are not there yet.

"It took me less than 30 seconds to pull the current debt clock up and the national debt is well over 16.9 trillion dollars."

But Sir, you can't count it as $17 trillion until it actually reaches that milestone.

You're not relating an accurate figure yourself, if you really want to get down to brass tacks.

Today, the debt stands at $16.954 trillion.

$16.954 trillion, while $46 billion short of $17 trillion is about $254 billion over the debt ceiling as it was last raised to by Congress when we last visited this issue.

The debt ceiling limit was exceeded on May the 19th.

You can argue all day long, your semantic filled rants, but had the debt ceiling not been raised, the fallout would have devastated every human being who lives in this nation.

Now that is a fact that you can't argue against.

The cushion was gone. Defaulting on debt would have caused this nation more grief than it could begin to stand.

But that's all behind us now. Your Senate Leader assured this nation in the future that holding this nation hostage will take a two-thirds majority veto to override any future debt ceiling raises.

Mitch McConnell may well have saved his own ass last night, to be allowed to prosper as a United States Senator for at least another term.

But, you feel free to continue to whine about the President and by all means, please continue cut off your nose to spite your face by dumping your "employees" into the welcoming hands of ObamaCare.

If you are being remotely truthful, I'm betting that your entire workforce is actively seeking alternative employment behind your back.

Your assistance in delivering a single-payer health care system, sooner than predicted, may well be the end result.

Oh me oh my...I can hear the howling now!!

I personally avoid using the term, because after all, isn't there enough hate and discontent running amok in this nation, if not right here in this forum?

The biggest irony is this fight about the debt fight only did one thing: it increased the debt.

The current estimate for economic damages is at $24 billion. The taxes alone lost on that amount is by the most conservative estimate are $2 billion. That means that now $2 billion more must be borrowed.

China and the rest of the world didn't like the uncertainty and that pushed up the interest rate on the T-notes by 0.01%

That could cost the U.S. another $2 million on top of the usual borrowing costs (in the neighborhood of $15 million).

Actually that number is higher because that higher interest rate applied to all of the short term debt the U.S. carries that matures this week and next.

I'm still waiting for a bright lawyer to realize that all the workers across the Federal government also have a legal right to interest payments. The law is pretty clear.

So, do you have any more great ideas, Mr. Cruz?

That ship has sailed. As I said earlier today, Cruz is like the captain of the Italian Cruise ship that flipped over on its side and cost the lives of so many. Cruz ran the Republican flag ship aground. By the time they realized he was DRUNK WITH POWER at the helm of the ship it was too late for the more Sane Repubs to steer the ship back on course. So the ship toppled over but Cpn Crunch Cruz didn't stick around instead he jumped ship holding his own press conference while leaving Mitch,"the turtle"McConnell and John, of Orange, Boehner to pick up the pieces while he got on his own lifeboat and sailed away.

President Obama is doing what a good leader should do after a crisis like this he's on T.V. talking reconciliation bless his heart. Too bad he still doesn't realize these teabaggers aren't going to allow him any peace. Right now, Cpt.Crunch Cruz is somewhere plotting his next move. 1. "Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have."

  2. "Never go outside the expertise of your people. When an action or tactic is outside the experience of the people, the result is confusion, fear and retreat.... [and] the collapse of communication.

  3. "Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy. Look for ways to increase insecurity, anxiety and uncertainty. (This happens all the time. Watch how many organizations under attack are blind-sided by seemingly irrelevant arguments that they are then forced to address.)

  4. "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules. You can kill them with this, for they can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity."

  5. "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counteract ridicule. Also it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage."

  6. "A good tactic is one your people enjoy."

  7. "A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag. Man can sustain militant interest in any issue for only a limited time...."

  8. "Keep the pressure on, with different tactics and actions, and utilize all events of the period for your purpose."

  9. "The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself."

  10. "The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition. It is this unceasing pressure that results in the reactions from the opposition that are essential for the success of the campaign."

  11. "If you push a negative hard and deep enough, it will break through into its counterside... every positive has its negative."

  12. "The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative."

The national debt is on schedule to hit $17 trillion in the next few weeks, up from $10.6 trillion when President Obama took office in 2009.

This debt obligation comes out to nearly $53,000 if every person living in the U.S., including children and unemployed had to pay a share, according to a Harvard Report, titled 2012 Annual Report of the USA.

They win a skirmish and they are jumping up and down like they won the war. Odd that they don’t remember their history of political pendulum swings.

From the NYT - 2003

Democrats Seek a Stronger Focus, and Money

Democrats from the West came here in mid-May to share political hopes and fears and to reassure one another that despite President Bush's popularity, their party has a future.

Like their national counterparts, Western Democrats lack unity, a coherent message and enough money to compete with Republicans. Karen Marchioro, leader of the caucus, said, ''God knows we need help.'' Such laments are common in the party that once dominated American politics but does so no longer.

Republicans hold the offices of president, speaker of the House, and Senate majority leader. So the Democrats' glass is not half full, but half empty, and it appears to be leaking. Al From and Bruce Reed of the Democratic Leadership Council, a centrist group that was once the showcase for so-called New Democrats and rising stars like Bill Clinton and Al Gore, recently wrote, ''No party ever needed definition, or redefinition, more than the Democratic Party today.''

In the midst of another of their periodic painful identity crises, Democrats are composed of an awkward coalition whose clan chiefs have not yet gotten over the idea that power is the Democrats' entitlement and who therefore have not yet learned to sacrifice for the greater good. As Don Fowler, a former national chairman, observed, ''Our party has so many disparate points of influence that we can never focus enough to achieve our programs.''

This approach is all the more glaring when compared with the Republicans' success at planning and financing long-range projects and developing a clearly identified platform showcasing a consistent set of issues over the years.

A veteran Democratic consultant looked at the 2004 presidential field and found it symptomatic of a basic party problem: ''Sometimes we're so respectful of our diversity that we take completely preposterous people seriously. We always run the risk of the follies of the absurd when people want seriousness.'' In particular, he said Representative Dennis J. Kucinich of Ohio, the Rev. Al Sharpton of New York and former Senator Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois were not real potential nominees but ''products of the silly season.'' He said that because Mr. Sharpton and Ms. Moseley Braun are African-Americans, an essential block for any Democratic victory, white candidates were afraid to criticize them over either their effectiveness or ethics issues.

Of course American political history has almost as many examples of revivals from near-death as the Democrats have presidential candidates. Republicans were dismissed as finished after landslide defeats in 1964 and 1974. Richard M. Nixon and Ronald Reagan disproved those expectations. Then in the 1980's the so-called electoral lock was believed to prevent any Democrat from ever winning a majority in the Electoral College. Mr. Clinton disproved that.

But Democratic efforts to build a new infrastructure pale next to the layers of affiliated political groups, research groups and like-minded media organs that the Republicans have fortified over the decades, especially since the election of Mr. Reagan as president in 1980.

''We didn't stand for anything,'' Mr. Strauss said. ''We got what we deserved -- nothing.''

Bill Carrick, a more liberal Democratic strategist who is working for the presidential campaign of Representative Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri, said his party had ''run out of gas.''

A more general problem was identified by Governor Richardson. In an interview, he said it was ''very vague, but I think it's out there, that we're not the party of optimism and opportunity, that we're the party of malaise, and we're the party of class warfare.''

Norman J. Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute says Democrats may have passed a point where ''minority status gels and makes it exponentially harder to get back in'' because potential candidates and donors see only minority status in their future.

Or, as Mr. Gore's former campaign manager, Ms. Brazile put it: ''They play hardball. We play softball.'' Enjoy as long as it lasts and in the instantaneous news cycle we have now that could be tomorrow.

Included in the bill to reopen the Gov't and raise the debt ceiling is a provision, that was signed into law, essentially making future debt ceiling raises automatic, unless overridden by a veto vote of two-thirds majority of Congress.

That provision of the bill only applies to the time period between now and Feb. 7, 2014. It is the same provision that was in the 2011 debt ceiling bill. Read the 2013 bill for the details. Refer to page 24 were this provision starts. Anything beyond this would be unconstitutional.

I'm still waiting for a bright lawyer to realize that all the workers across the Federal government also have a legal right to interest payments. The law is pretty clear. (Care to expand on this point)

I guess we can add that to the 700% cost overrun on the Obamacare software that is a total failure. The cost estimate was about $90 million but so far it has cost about $700 million and rising to God knows what the final figure will be. But that’s small compared to the $2.6 trillion cost of Obamacare. I wonder what humongous cost overruns of that monstrosity will be applied to our debt?

No. But holding the nation hostage to the point of ruin is.

So you're saying that Obama should have signed the one year delay of the Obamacare mandate and we would not have been dragged through this episode... I agree.

Jealous?

No. The GOP should not have held the nation hostage over a law that passed through the House and Senate. Then signed into law by the President of the United States of America, who honorably won the vote of the American people, by the law of the land. The Affordable Care Act was even contested in front of the highest judicial bench in the nation. AND... passed muster.

Despite all of this, the GOP and the Teabaggers chose to drive America to the brink. The law of the land and the American people were not good enough for the GOP and the Teabaggers. They found a way to make us all pay for our democracy.

You can piss in the wind all you want to Jt6gR3hM. In the end, the voters will get their say. The GOP has a lot of homework to do if they want to be a viable party in the future. Just my opinion. Time will tell.

Limric, thanks for your 5:38 pm post. I was looking for that list last night, which puts all of this crap into perspective.

The Republicans won nothing....nothing at all.

Kinda makes me wonder what that standing ovation for John Boehner was all about.

I guess they were uniting for an episode of the biggest loser.

If nothing came out of this debacle, no one can claim that the President and the Democrats are going to be pushed around.

Will the Republicans learn their lesson or will they test the waters next year?

Stocking up on popcorn, 'cause it's gonna be fun to watch.

The Republican Party is self-destructing all by themselves.

Centrist Leaning Republicans WILL most definitely be distancing themselves from those who lean far to the right, and they will be walking the Tea Party kooks down the gangplank in the coming months.

Mark my words.

alprova,In 1976 the Republican party had similar problems.By 1980 the party decided to nominate a true conservative. The Reagan Revolution was born.In 1984 Reagan was reelected by the largest landslide in history, he even got the progressive rino H W elected. So don't count them out to soon.I don't personally see any Reagans out there but you just never know.

You can be mad, sad, or glad but reality is that if you consider yourself white, and most of you do, you are well on your way to being...everyone smile for the camera...a minority. The smart among us will learn how to make the most of it. The slower of you will mumble and grumble and go with the flow. Those not so blessed with brains, (and you know who you are) will leap about, froth and foam and curse. They'll prefer to cast stones at the darkness than light a candle.

The only hope I see for the Republican Party to put a man in the White House is for them to nominate Chris Christie.

He is very much like Ronald Reagan -- a man who knew how to work with both sides of the aisle and to convince them to work with him.

Chris Christie is the only Republican who stands a chance of getting my vote in the future.

What's up with the temperature reading being stuck on 61 degrees for about five days on the TFP, Channel 3, and Channel 9 websites?

Channel 12 is the only local site that seems to have a working temperature application at the moment.

I will al. I am glad no additional delays were allowed and was hoping the push would be to implement the AHA entirely and as scheduled without the arbitrary exceptions made thus far. I am all for allowing people to see how the access to insurance affects them, the federal budget, the debt, the cost of insurance and their health care.

Healthcare and health care insurance are two different issues. The republicans need to change their strategy and insist that the cost for government sponsored healthcare insurance be paid as incurred with increased taxes at all levels.

The exchanges are said to have a few clitches. When does a clitch become a failure or crash?

Why is funding needed for a program that was sold as a program that would save money. The taxes and other cost were effective before the benefits were available? But, approval to borrow money to fund this reduced cost program is required. It doesn't compute.

Sounds like everyone's a victim. How sweet. But you're not. If you're "white", no matter if your parents came from Ireland in the potato famine voluntarily, you're still ahead of the former slaves brought to the US in chains. Volsam's ancestors likely came over as many of us did - as indentured servants. 7 years work to pay off the cost of bringing you here and then you're a free white man just like George Washington or Ben Franklin.

I disagree that the poor old Tea Party dudes and Conservatives of Volsam's world are victims. They didn't wade out into shark infested waters to save the drowning. They did nothing to put their lives or fortunes at risk for what they believe (unlike the real Patriots of 1775 who really did risk their lives for their beliefs). The tea dudes are self appointed/self annointed in their titles. They follow the message of the voices in their head.

”The average Democrat in the House or Senate in Washington D.C.” comprises the entirety of the Fleabagger class? .... Really?

BTW... what happened to your Fleabagger meme that the Republicans own everything?

The top 10 percent of taxpayers pay over 70% of the total amount collected in federal income taxes and that's up from 55% in 1986. This group not only pays a higher amount but also pays a much higher percentage of their income in taxes

The remaining 90% pay just under 30% of the tax burden.

47% of all Americans pay hardly anything at all.
