Boyd-Buchanan volleyball coach Ashley Rose emphasized to her players the importance of coming out focused as they began playing in Thursday's Class A high school state sectional against Jackson County.

It took a little longer than the coach would've liked, but the Lady Buccaneers did win the opening set, which proved to be pivotal as they went on and defeated the Lady Blue Devils 3-1. Set scores were 27-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-20.

Host Goodpasture beat Sale Creek 3-0 in another Class A sectional. Set scores were 25-8, 25-11, 25-7.

Boyd-Buchanan (30-13) and Goodpasture (42-0) move on to the state tournament starting Wednesday at Murfreesboro.

Had the Lady Bucs dropped the opening set, they could've been down 2-0 heading to the third. Instead, they were able to rally from 1-1 and had a long scoring streak in each of the last two sets. Both times it was with Katie Delay serving.

Delay led Boyd-Buchanan with seven aces and Asia Kirkman led the hitting with 23 kills. Kristen Reynolds paced the Lady Bucs with 28 assists and contributed 12 kills.

"When she's serving, Asia is on the front row," Rose said of Delay. "Between those two, we had a couple of runs where it was either an ace or a kill. Between the two of them and Kristen's setting, they pulled us out of some big holes."
