A family of six was displaced Sunday morning after a fire damaged their residence on the 1800 block of Tunnel Boulevard, according to a news release.

The residents had escaped the blaze unharmed by the time firefighters responded to the 4:42 a.m. call. Firefighters on the scene said flames were visible on most sides of the house upon their arrival, fire department spokesman Bruce Garner said in the release.

Chattanooga Fire Department Lt. Tim Waters said the fire appears to have started in the laundry room, then quickly spread up into the attic. Firefighters from three additional companies responded to the blaze to extinguish the two flaming areas, and the loss was estimated at $20,000.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross of Southeast Tennessee were called in to provide assistance to the family. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
