Lee University will be inducting six people into its athletic hall of fame on Nov. 1 with a 5 p.m. ceremony in the Cleveland school's Centenary Room. The six are basketball players Greg Cain (1968-72), Jan Dodson Spangler and Jessica Still Stone (both 2004-08), softball pitcher Charli Duff Crawford (2005-06), baseball player Jeremy Hutslar (2005-08) and soccer player Janaina Novaes Miknus (2004-07). Miknus is No. 1 in school history with 118 career goals and fourth with 57 assists, and she was a three-time NAIA first-team All-American and a four-time conference player of the year and national all-tournament selection. Hutslar is Lee's career leader in hits (310), stolen bases (113) and runs scored (253) and was the 2008 NAIA World Series Charlie Hustle Award winner. Crawford is first in Lee career softball earned run average (1.29) and in 2006 went 25-5 with 185 strikeouts in 204 innings and became the program's first NAIA first-team All-American. Stone and Spangler followed coach Marty Rowe from Brescia and totaled 1,772 and 1,396 points as Lee won 110 times in 127 games and reached a No. 2 national ranking and they earned All-America status; Stone hit a school-record 365 3-pointers. Cain averaged 5.4 assists with 11.5 points and scored more than 30 points four times for a Lee men's team that went 96-25 and finished third twice in the National Christian College Athletic Association national tournament.

Golf

• Led by Courtney Shelton's first-place 4-under-par 68, the Lee women's golf team is in second place out of nine teams at 301, three shots behind Dallas Baptist, after the first round Monday of the NCCAA national invitational tournament at Panama City Beach, Fla. The Lee men are tied for third with Colorado Christian in their 18-team championship event at 291, two shots behind Southern Wesleyan and seven behind Dallas Baptist. Covenant College is 18th at 325. Lee's Hunter Vest and Shea Sylvester are tied for fourth individually at 70, three behind the leader from SWU, and teammates Matt Emery and Taylor Davis shot 75 and 76. Covenant's James Van Nice opened with a 77. In addition to Shelton for the Lady Flames, Bernardette Little is tied for eighth at 75 and Madison Alexander, Cori Burns and Callie Kitchens shot 78, 80 and 81.

Field Hockey

• The second goal of the game by Candice Stefanic was the winner Monday as Washington & Lee edged Sewanee 3-2 in field hockey. Carrie Anderson's goals from assists by Maggie Boozer and Tilden Davis gave Sewanee (7-4) a 2-1 lead going into halftime at Lexington, Va., but Mary Virginia Long scored at 45:34 and Stefanic converted a Lindsey Purpura assist at 58:43 for the Generals (4-13), who outshot the Tigers 17-10. Sewanee's Gabrielle Fignar had eight saves.

Baseball

• The Chattanooga Cyclones K fall baseball team won the Southern Wood Bat Samford University Invitational this past weekend in Birmingham. The Cyclones (17-5-2) rallied past Nelson Baseball School 6-5 on Kyle Kapherr's last-inning two-run double, giving Ricky Vaughn the pitching win. Hunter Mercer had two hits, drove in two runs and scored one and Cory Edgemon scored two in that game. Mercer was the winning pitcher and had two hits and three runs in an 11-1 win over Cyclones V, when Edgemon had three hits, a run and an RBI and Kapherr had three RBIs. Cade Evans and Edgemon each had two hits and an RBI in an 8-4 defeat of Viper Baseball Academy, when Nic Gaddis was the winning pitcher with relief from Aaron Granger, and Aaron Grayson got the win and Granger had three hits, three runs and two RBIs in a 10-3 victory over the ST Stars. Gaddis had two hits and two RBIs and Evans had two hits, two runs and an RBI.

Running

• Covenant junior Beth Burgess was chosen USA South women's cross country runner of the week for her 33rd-place finish out of 178 runners at the Berry Invitational meet on Saturday. Burgess ran the 6-kilometer course in 24 minutes, 49 seconds.
