A memorial wall will be dedicated at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park in Birchwood in honor of the Cherokee who were forcibly removed from their native homeland in the Indian Removal of 1838.

2013 marks the 175th anniversary of the Cherokee Removal, often referred to as The Trail of Tears.

The memorial wall features the names of 2,535 heads of household from the 1835 Henderson Roll, a census of Cherokees east of the Mississippi River. It also has 14 panels with the names of each head of household and the number of people in the household engraved alphabetically by state for Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina.

Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker will be at the event, as well as a representative from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation.

The park is at 6800 Blythe Ferry Road off Highway 60 between Dayton and Cleveland, Tenn.
