UTC golf finishes second at Bridgestone and other sports news

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team finished second out of 14 teams Sunday in the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate tournament at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C., and Ewan Scott was tied for third in the individual standings with 36-hole totals of 577 and 142. The Mocs finished six strokes behind North Carolina, and were six shots better that 10th-ranked Virginia Tech, which wound up fourth. In addition to Scott's performance, Chris Robb wound up tied for sixt at 143, and Liam Johnston was tied for ninth at even-par 144. Other Mocs golfers were Wes Gosselin (149) and Davis Bunn (155). Stewart Thomas, playing as an individual finished at 6-over 150.

• The amateur team made it four in a row by winning Tennessee Challenge Cup Matches this past weekend at Stonehenge Golf Club in Fairfield Glade. The professional team, captained by Chattanoogan Hunt Gilliland took an early lead, winning five of eight four-ball matches Saturday morning but the amateurs under Chattanoogas Mike Jenkins won six of eight in the afternoon, and the two teams split Sunday's singles matches to give the amateurs a 17-15 win. Other local players included amateurs Mike Poe from Athens and Chattanooga native and former Baylor standout Josh Nelms. The pro team included Crossville pros Greg Wyatt and Kelvin Burgin of Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain, and former UTC golfer and Chattanooga Golf & Country Club assistant pro Matt Brock, who is now at Lawrenceburg Golf & Countrey Club.

Football

• A memorial service for 1951 and '52 University of Chattanooga football Little All-American and former New York Giants player Chester Lagod will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, and visitation at Heritage Funeral Home on East Brainerd Road is set for 6-8 tonight. He died Friday at age 85. Lagod, who also had a chance to play professional baseball, was selected as an offensive lineman to the UC/UTC all-century football team in 2003. The family requests that any memorials go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's research.

Soccer

• UTC lost 5-0 at UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference women's soccer Sunday despite a combined 12 saves by goalkeepers Taylor Mangrum and Lauren Thomas. UTC junior Crystal Mackezyk led the Mocs with four shots.

• Lee University claimed a win and a tie its Gulf South Conference soccer doubleheader Sunday at Alabama-Huntsville, tying 1-1 in the women's game and winning 1-0 in overtime in the men's. Lee's men (8-3-4, 7-2-4) were scoreless in their match, but Arturo Rocha, who was returning to action after a knee injury, scored on an assist by Justin Furey. The Lady Flames (10-3-1, 7-1-1) fell behind 1-0 just after halftime, but Laura Thacker evened the score on a corner kick by Debbie Rogers.

• The Sewanee soccer teams split Sunday in Southern Athletic Association games against visiting Rhodes, winning 1-0 in the men's game and falling 1-0 in the women's. Griffin Miller scored in the 87th minute to give the Tigers (8-7-2, 3-4-0) the win.

• Bethany Logan registered three goals and an assist and Ally Jennings scored twice as Covenant College beat William Peace 5-0 in USA South women's soccer Saturday at Raleigh, N.C. Logan's first score from a Kaitlyn Winking assist gave the fourth-place Lady Scots (9-8-1, 7-3-1) a 1-0 lead going into halftime, and keeper Hannah Bales, Logan, Anna Porch and Rachel Bernard had second-half assists.

• Bob Jones University swept the Tennessee Temple soccer teams Saturday at Camp Jordan, 3-2 in the women's game and 4-0 in the men's. That left TTU's Lady Crusaders 5-11-1 and the Crusaders 3-14.

Volleyball

• Sewanee fell 3-0 at Hendrix in SAA volleyball Sunday at Conway, Ark. The Tigers were close in all three sets, which were 25-21, 25-23 and 25-19, and Jamie Sue Wilson led the Sewanee attack with 13 digs and a match-high 19 kills. Kayla Sewell had 13 digs, and Walker Buxton added a team-high 18 assists.

Field Hockey

• Carrie Anderson scored for Sewanee, but the Tigers lost 2-1 in overtime against visiting Centre College in SAA field hockey Sunday. Anderson tied the game in the 21st minute in Sewanee's final home match of the season.

Cross Country

• The Lee University men's cross country team finished fifth out of 10 teams in the GSC meet Saturday at Veterans Park in Hoover, Ala., with Camden Perez and Patrick Shultz coming in 13th and 17th in the 8-kilometer race. The Lady Flames were sixth out of 11 teams in the 5k with Cayce Bryan 20th and Ashley Matthews 25th.
