Boy in Atlanta area wounded by gunfire called innocent bystander

ATLANTA - An 11-year-old boy is hospitalized after he was shot during a gun battle in southwest Atlanta.

Atlanta police Officer John Chafee says the child was shot in the shoulder around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday on Coleman Street. The boy was in stable condition Wednesday night.

Investigators say they believe the child was an innocent bystander and wounded as two groups of people exchanged gunfire in the street.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that after the child was shot, his brother carried him a few houses down the street to his home, where a family member called 911. The child was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

Chafee tells WSB-TV that witnesses reported the suspects may have fled on bicycles.
