Graduated Belmont University baseball pitcher Chase Brookshire from Chattanooga and McCallie School was one of the six Ohio Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes for the 2012-13 school year. The league announced them Tuesday. The three men and three women were chosen from a group of 22 finalists by a vote of the OVC faculty athletics representatives. Brookshire, a second-team all-conference player and OVC all-tournament selection this past spring, when he had a 2.18 earned run average, was chosen by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 20th round of the 2013 baseball draft. He earned a management degree with a 3.70 grade point average and was one of 10 national finalists for the Senior CLASS Award given to someone with exceptional community, classroom, character and competition achievements. He was co-president of Belmont's Student-Athlete Adivsory Committee and co-founder and president of the Nashville school's Fellowship of Christian Athletes group. He also did volunteer work for the Nashville Rescue Mission.

Golf

• Led by Courtney Shelton's 11-stroke improvement to a 70 from the first day of its Lady Flames Shootout at Cleveland Country Club, the Lee University women's golf team shot out from a two-stroke edge to a 25-stroke victory at 629 with a 305 round Tuesday. Burns won by six strokes over third-place Shorter's Carolin Westerburg at 157, and Lee's Cori Burns tied for third at 158 with teammates Bernadette Little and Callie Kitchens sharing fifth at 160. North Georgia was the runner-up team, nine strokes ahead of Shorter, and Tennessee Wesleyan was fifth at 686 with Abby Dukes tying for 15th individually at 166 and Logan Cass and Lexi Stewart also in the top 25 at 170 and 174. Stewart played for Soddy-Daisy in high school. Sixth-place King had Elizabeth Swallow tying for third and Walker Valley graduate Cortnee Young 22nd at 172.

Tennis

• Jenny Liles, the 2013 Sewanee valedictorian and an NCAA Division III All-America tennis player, is featured in the fall 2013 edition of NCAA Champion magazine. The profile article, headlined "Valedictorian managed to do it all," illustrates the point by relating that on the day Liles graduated as a double major in biology and English with a 4.12 GPA, she delivered her valedictorian speech and then rushed to the airport to get to her NCAA tournament match that afternoon in Atlanta. Liles was the first Southern Athletic Association woman of the year and also earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship; she is in medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Volleyball

• Chelsea Breaden and Ashley Ferris had nine kills apiece and Taylor Fink had 21 assists as Bryan College breezed to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-11) volleyball win Tuesday night at Truett-McConnell and clinched the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season championship. Corrie Walker had 11 digs for Bryan (29-1, 18-0).

• Chelsea VanDyk had 13 kills and Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 35 assists and 13 digs and matched Estes Carlson with four aces as Covenant College beat Agnes Scott 3-1 in volleyball Tuesday night on Lookout Mountain. Carlson also had 23 digs, and Hannah Rogers and Cora Schroeder had 10 and nine kills and three aces each for the Lady Scots (17-10).

• Payton Tipton from Cleveland High School served a team-high six aces as King University beat Erskine 3-0 in Conference Carolinas volleyball Tuesday. That made King 23-4, 12-1 in the league.

Football

• University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football coach Russ Huesman will show some game video and a preview of how the Mocs are preparing for Saturday's game at Appalachian State at the UTC Mocs Club's last monthly Coaches Luncheon of the fall semester Thursday. It is set for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Tennessee Room at SpringHill Suites, which is downtown at 495 Riverfront Parkway, and the public is invited. A meal is included in the $10 admission cost.
