UTC soccer falls to Alabama State and other sports news

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team lost 3-2 at Alabama State on Sunday. The Mocs (1-2) rallied twice to tie the match with Crystal Mackezyk scoring on a penalty kick in the 36th minute and Clare Latham tying the match 2-2 in the 67th minute assisted by Skylar Brewer. But India Pleasant scored the game-winner in the 73rd minute. UTC outshot Alabama State 16-14, and Mocs keeper Lauren Thomas made seven saves in goal.

• Ashley Johnson's goal in the final minute gave Bryan College a 2-1 women's soccer win Saturday night against Cincinnati Christian -- and coach Mark Sauve's 50th win at the Dayton school. Emily Lambert scored from an Alex Kuh assist in the 36th minute for Bryan, which had advantages of 15-8 and 7-3 in corner kicks, but Kymmy Owens netted a Lauren Wisecup pass for the visitors seven minutes later.

Volleyball

• The UTC volleyball team started strong but lost Florida A&M 3-2 as the Georgia Tech Invitational concluded Sunday in Atlanta. The Mocs (0-3) won the first set 26-16, before dropping the next two sets but rallied for a 26-24 win in the fourth. But the Rattlers won the deciding set 15-10 to claim the victory. Freshman Allie Davenport had 15 kills in 13 digs for her first collegiate double-double, and she had a team-high three solo blocks. Sophomore libero Catherine Chason had 16 digs to lead UTC. Despite going winless on the weekend, UTC sophomore Julimar Alvarado was named to the all-tournament team after getting 22 kills and 23.5 points on the weekend. The Mocs will open their home schedule this week as the hosts of the Country Inns & Suites invitational. Play begins Thursday when UTC will take on Tennessee at 7 p.m. in Maclellan Gym.

Field Hockey

• Three first-half goals and strong goaltending led visiting Bridgewater to a 5-2 NCAA Division III field hockey win Sunday at Sewanee. The host Tigers (1-1) had advantages of 22-12 in shots and 14-8 in shots on goal, but Jessica Balsano made 12 saves for the Virginia team. Sewanee outshot Bridgewater (2-0) 12-5 in the opening half but trailed 3-0 on scores by Megan Gould, Taylor Prillaman and Caroline Augsburger. Carrie Anderson and Karen Dawson scored in the second half for Sewanee.
