Former death row inmate accused of brutal rape in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE - A man who once awaited execution on death row now sits in a Knox County jail facing charges he raped his girlfriend at gunpoint on Labor Day.

Arthur Copeland, 39, is being held in jail in lieu of $1 million bond. He is charged with two counts of aggravated rape, one offense of aggravated assault and one count of especially aggravated kidnapping, records show.

Copeland was arrested without incident just before midnight Wednesday on Western Avenue, Knoxville Police Department spokesman DeBusk said.
