The Trapper

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Ron Paul for President? Or Pat Buchanan?

Comparing Muslim countries with Christendom, it's obvious Muslims need Christ. A virgin-born atoning-death resurrection holy Prophet Whose countries define civilization (and decadence) trumps an ordinarily born militaristic polygamist who died ordinarily and stayed dead. (Comparing Islamic and Atheistic countries, the race to the bottom features stiff competition.) Cruise missiles as now suggested won't help, so don't bother with them. If we're gonna do anything, it better be something that might work.

Not that forcing Muslims to become Christians is either good Christianity (it isn't), or good policy. But give them the opportunity. Insist, as a condition of supporting any group in Syria, that it protect Christian civil rights (and others too, but this is where the rubber happens to meet the road), including the right of Muslims to become Christians. And oh yeah, insist on peace with Israel. Sign off on a decent Bill of Rights and on peace with Israel, and maybe you can have some aid. Murder innocent people, or fail to execute their murderers, and when our military wants to practice killing people and breaking things, maybe we'll practice on you. Our guys are very good at this.

What would success look like if the U.S. attacks Syria? What is the end signal? We are told regime change is not an objective so what will be different? Almost continuous wars and other foolish government behavior has essentially bankrupt America and our leaders still think they are the 800 lb. gorilla in the room.

I do not trust this president, a former community organizer, and his staff to lead another war effort. See the two we are already in as examples.

Spending the war dollars on America's infrastructure, assisting the truly disabled, children, the homeless, the elderly in need, eliminating waste and fraud, job creation would have the country in outstanding fiscal condition.

Where are you Ron Paul? He had it right.

Clay is in step with the American public on this issue for sure!

Somehow, the US political class still seems to believe that US imposed death and destruction are teaching aids that will lead to better government in Syria, that US missiles and bombs will somehow demonstrate the benefits of high technology.

If bombing could cure politicians of their power lust, the American public would surely favor it's use in DC.

How can so much ignorance be packed into one post, as maximyth has offered this morning?

The timeline for withdrawal from Afghanistan was set in motion before President Obama took office.

Neither the President nor Mrs Clinton have expressed anything negative about Israel.

And finally, no one from Syria has destroyed our property or killed any American, outside of perhaps any who were in Syria and who became casualties of war.

I have no idea what kind of Christian would brag about returning from a church building mission one minute, then would go off on some tirade about lobbing 100 missiles into a sovereign nation the next, an act that would most assuredly be responsible for killing vast amounts of innocent people.

Take a bow, for your words of "wisdom" have convinced me that any action taken would only make things worse than they already are.

Tribalists, like nationalists, are incapable of “learning their lesson” from outsiders. The Middle East’s tribal religion must be displaced by a non-tribal religion. One need not read any further than his asinine comment about achieving a "W" in Iraq to see what a simple minded fool Maximus is. Of course, that goes without saying. There is hardly anything that flows from that warped mind of his that doesn't attest to his lunacy. There is nothing even remotely successful about the 10-yr. long war that we have waged there. Iraq is presently without even the most rudimentary infrastructure, the "government," if it can be called that, is in no way favorable to America or looks anything remotely like a democracy, over 2 million inhabitants have been displaced from their homes, hundreds of thousands killed as a direct result of the war, and suicide bombings are on the rise, with over 3000 people killed from them in recent months. What's more, toppling Saddam's regime with no specific plans of what to replace it with only served to destabilize the Middle East even worse than it already was. Whatever form of government takes shape once America is completely gone - if indeed we are ever completely gone militarily - will be another dictatorship run by whatever tyrant is able to take control.

Maximus is as idiotic and irrelevant as the con-man. He doesn't regurgitate Bible verses like the con-man does but he regurgitates his typical ultra-conservative right wing BS just as religiously - just another deaf, dumb, and blind member of the herd of unthinking fools.

I love it when our politicians claim the moral high ground...like we have any monopoly on morals, especially when it comes to using weapons of mass destruction. We used Napalm freely in Vietnam and to this day we haven't admitted the extent of devastation it rendered upon the people there, many of whom are still suffering the horrid, debilitating effects of it. In fact, many of our own soldiers are still suffering the effects of it and the government won't even own up to it! And then of course there was that little matter of dropping 2 atomic bombs on Japan. Chemical weapons are a definite no-no but nuclear are perfectly okay, I guess? At least as long as we're the country that uses them first. And today we're droning people with abandon in whatever Middle-east country we damn well please - never mind that we are killing at least as many innocent people as enemy combatants along the way. I love it when they claim that they are legal and justified. Just imagine if any other country was sending drones over here and claiming that they were justified in doing so. Any of us would readily see it as an assault and an affront, the equivalent of all-out warfare.

America's foreign policy has become, not one of morals, but might makes right, and our war-mongering politicians just love to use any excuse to pull out our high-tech toys of mass destruction and watch them go boom, as we wave our flags, watch the fireworks display of shock and awe on our TVs, and cheer on the home boys.

Striking Syria, to quote Pat Buchanan, would be ”an act of such paralyzing stupidity one cannot believe that even this crowd would consciously commit it”.

Yet where is the left? Those that so loudly protested Bush’s criminal run up to Iraq? Listening to public opinion? HA! Their actions thus far prove that the Democratic Party’s political class is openly contemptuous of it!

To twist a phrase from Jonathan Swift’s ‘Gulliver’s Travels’: “I cannot but conclude that the Bulk of America’s Democrats, to be the most pernicious Race of little odious Vermin that Nature ever suffered to crawl upon the Surface of the Earth.”

Sigh……

With the Left AWOL and a Democratic Party living up to their traditional uselessness, this is what it has come to, and I can’t believe I’m saying it but; the GOP, the party that is sincerely dreadful by any measure, may the best, perchance the only hope, for circumventing the impending disaster Obama and his inner circle want to thrust upon us -- and the world.

We are now living in a counterfactual nation, where the presentation of supposition as fact camouflages the absence of proof.

Why come to the aid of a religious minority when cultural and ethnic minorities are persecuted all over the world? I don't see how Syria is different from Egypt, or even China at some level. "Rickaroo said... America's foreign policy has become, not one of morals, but might makes right, and our war-mongering politicians just love to use any excuse to pull out our high-tech toys of mass destruction ..."

First I don't have a problem with our country retaliating when it's been attacked. I have no problem with the bombs that were dropped on Japan in 1945 because of the attack on Pearl Harbor. I have no problem with Bush going after Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan because that is supposedly where he was hiding and he was the one to give the order to attack the U.S. on 9/11. I consider both those attacks on the U.S. to be unprovoked.

When Bush claimed he was going to go after Bin Laden and those responsible for 9/11 most Americans were 110% behind him and right in his corner all the way. However, he allowed himself to be bamboozled into veering so far off course by his scumbag neo-con cronies into attacking Iraq which had zilch to do with 9/11 until no one believed he had a clue as to what was really happening over there. He first told the country it was all about the WMD's they supposedly had. Of course everyone on the planet now knows all of that crap was cooked up, made-up and just plain lies. When that didn't work then his excuse was he was going to bring Democracy to their country. That was laughable. Here was a country over 5000 years old and he was going to bring Democracy to them. That certainly hasn't worked out so far. In the process of his failed war he damn near destroyed the economy in this country.

Ten years later and the neo-cons still slither around trying to make excuses for their massive screw-ups. If President Obama doesn't have any better intell then what Bush had, he needs to back off of Syria. Just a day ago the Pentagon released a report saying it would take 75,000 troops to secure the chemical weapons Assaud has in his arsenal. Hezebollah has set up training camps on the sites of the chemical weapons. So here's the scenario, he can't send troops because the majority of people here at home are definitely against taking that kind of action. If he sends in missiles to those sites it could disperse those chemicals into the air and kill thousands as if Assaud himself was doing it or at the very least Hezebollah could gain access to those chemicals and attempt to use them on Israel.

For now President Obama should sit back, take a chill pill and wait to see what the rest of the world is willing to do in the face of the atrocities Assaud has committed against his own people. What he cannot do, what he must NOT DO is launch a unilateral attack against Syria. If he does and it's a bust, the teabaggers, right wing nut jobs, birthers and all the rest will come after him with all their might to send him packing out of the White House BEFORE his term ends. Not to mention how they would use a bust to hang around Hillary Clinton's neck should she decide to run in 2016.

Ibshame,I'm not going to debate the rightness or wrongness of dropping nuclear bombs on Japan. I'm just saying that the actions we take are based more on simply having the weaponry and technological know-how in the first place rather than being more "moral" than those we attack. Whether it's nuclear bombs, cluster bombs, napalm, or drones, we make it excusable for us to have them and to use them when we see fit, but we're quick to bring up the "red line" if others dare to even contemplate the use of whatever weapons we deem unconscionable for other countries to have.

I believe that WW2 was the last truly justifiable, necessary war for the U.S. to be engaged in. The enemy was well defined and Hitler's diabolical mission was obvious. Also, there was no Military-Industrial complex in place then and the war was truly the unified will of the people. But everything that happens in the Mideast today is a complex and convoluted mish-mash of events many of which this country has contributed to, depending on our fickle allegiances we had with whatever dictators best served our interests at the time. We have had our own hand in the cookie jar of the Middle East for decades now and whatever bad sh#t goes down there in whatever country, we are as culpable as any dictator when it comes to the blood of innocents.

We made every excuse in the book not to get involved in WW2 and it took Japan bombing our own soldiers to finally push us into it. But now that we have become an undisputed military power with all kinds of sophisticated, technologically advance weaponry we make every excuse FOR going to war, just so we can play with our expensive high-tech toys of destruction and watch things go boom. And then we pump our chests and say GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Dr. Wright had it right when he said that America's chickens are coming home to roost. This nation has enough innocent blood on its hands to turn all the oceans red. We are on a downhill slide and going faster and faster into the cesspool of our own filth, militarily, economically, and spiritually (and the spiritual part has nothing to do with our militaristic brand of Christianity, which is the antithesis of spirituality).

No, PT, Rickaroo has it nailed. Both in the Middle East and in Latin America we've meddled. (and we aren't the only ones; the UK is just as culpable) We alternately support, then over throw dictators, "make" countries out of regions by applying artificial borders, and follow the dollar wherever it leads, trampling over the rights of those that were there first. We've done this for the better part of a century. It hasn't been all bad, of course, but when we have a financial interest in a place we tend to screw it up. I thought it was pretty funny that the US was perplexed by the success of communists in developing countries south of our border. If you prop up far right regimes long enough, the rebound will be far left.

Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, China, Japan, Ottoman Empire, Egypt, Persia, etc. .... not justification but only adding some sense of context.

I thought it was pretty funny that the US was perplexed by the success of communists in developing countries south of our border. If you prop up far right regimes long enough, the rebound will be far left.

Not perplexed as it is just human nature at work. The left always initially has more attractiveness to the masses due to their ability to better exploit natural human drives of lust for power, covetousness, sloth, and envy to win them to their side. Of course those are the same things that lead to the left’s downfall when it is ultimately realized that their system will not adequately prove an acceptable standard of living or the freedom of action for the individual’s need to seek their own path.

That is indeed true, Jt6. Communism looks good when living under a right wing fascist who commits human rights violations, but in reality doesn't do much better. The average American is perplexed because they have not lived under the former, and they are taught to fear the latter.

Lisa, I don't draw much distnction between commies on one side, and fascists on the other. But I'm just a perplexed American.

The comments coming from the right are simply hilarious.

All was okay when GWB wanted to go into Iraq for the same reasons attacking Syria is being contemplated today.

The intelligence is sound. There is no doubt. The one thing different today is that Barack Obama is leading the charge.

What is hilarious is the LWNJ’s making all of the same claims to get this country into a war that is not in our interests. Considering how they so vehemently denigrate the Bush administration for taking the same actions. Those that initially supported Bush, in Iraq and Afghanistan, thought this country was over it’s Viet Nam induced inability to fight a total war to victory and completely subjugate the enemy population. That it would be done with minimum costs in our troops’ lives and the nation’s treasure once we decided to commit our troops. At one time we knew how to do that but obviously we have forgotten the plan.

We should have known better with the knowledge of how Bush Sr.’s administration left the field of battle with the job undone in the early 90’s. However the same occurred when Bush 2 stopped the offensive phase of the war and attempted to show how politically correct we are by engaging in nation building and position holding operations that left our troops vulnerable.

The country is tired of this and see Syria as just another of the same type of limited war that fulfills no national interests and will lead to dead military members and huge costs to rebuild that country's infrastructure and economy after we destroy them. Contrary to Obama’s claims of no boots on the ground they are already involved in mission creep by talking about tens of thousands of troops to secure Syria’s WMD’s.

If the nations of the world think this is an event that needs to be addressed then let them make their case and carry their part of the load. Instead of currently standing around wringing their hands waiting for the U.S. to act and then cursing us at every turn as to how we did it all wrong. We don’t need any more of that B.S. in our lives.

They don’t have to live under either system to understand the harm they both bring to society. It is very important to inform the public to avoid the lure of those systems and their corresponding economic systems of strict Socialism and Dirigisme.

President Obama can do as President Clinton did in Rwanda: sit back, do nothing and watch hundreds of innocent men, women and children get killed by their own government.

Try 500,000 to 1,000,000 in Rwanda and Obama is already up to 100,000 in Syria. Seems awfully strange that we’re being distracted by this now after all of the atrocities that have occurred, in that country, before this event. Why now?

Ike, My husband wants to know where in Carrabelle the live aboard community is. Having lived aboard for 18 years we miss the boating community.

Gosh, degage, I am not sure there is one. The place is so tiny. There are certainly transients that live on their boats, but the marinas are small and there are no big mooring fields. I will ask around if you like.

Ike, Thanks, we are wanting to move there and wondered how the town is. WE like small towns and still want to be near the water.

The town is wonderful in a quirky way. The whole county has rather insane politics, no different from any other small rural country with mostly locals that have been there for several generations. I have heard stories that I don't dare put in print! The primary jobs are the state and county prisons, as well as county government jobs. We volunteer for the county emergency management office among other things, but as newbies our opinion carries very little weight so we just go with the flow and take it for what it is. No Walmart! (1 hour away) No movie theaters. Tallahassee 1 hour away, Panama City 2 hours. Lots of great local businesses, few franchises. You will have to like isolation and dislike shopping to live here, but you have great access to both sheltered and open water. The marine repair services here are top notch, as long as you are willing to give them time. Can't beat the wildlife-black bear in our driveway last week, bald eagles, osprey, foxes, manatee. And, by the way, it is a buyers market for sure. Prices are down and a lot is available. If you would like more info, I'll try to give you a safe contact for us (I have a second email address that would do) and I would be happy to answer any questions or find answers for you.
