The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is still seeking its first win of the 2013 volleyball season, after UNC Charlotte rallied to defeat the Mocs 3-2 Friday in the second night of the Country Inns & Suites Invitational at Maclellan Gymnasium.
Amanda Videmsek had 20 kills and 11 digs, Taylor Cannon and Claire Kreuz added 14 and 13 kills, Britney Leigh Held had 54 assists and 21 digs and Michelle Hovey contributed 38 digs in the 25-27, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-8 victory for Charlotte (2-3). The Mocs’ Allie Davenport led everyone with 21 kills and also made 12 digs, while Kendall Sexton had 10 kills and Briana Reid totaled 37 assists and 15 digs. Catherine Chason had 26 digs and Melissa Green added 18.
• At Cleveland, Lee University opened its season in its own invitational Friday by losing 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-21) to Bethel College of Indiana but rebounded to beat Indiana Tech 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-15).
Paula Martins had 18 kills on .567 hitting in the Lady Flames’ win, and Latrice Johnson had 14 kills and 13 digs while Camil Martinez combined 36 assists and 11 digs. She had 41 assists and 19 digs and Martins had 16 kills against Bethel, when Lauren Williams, Johnson and freshman Erin Hill had nine kills apiece. Alica Carlton and Aubrey Husak had 15 and 13 kills for the Pilots, and Morgan Fox had 36 assists and 13 digs.
Bryan began play in the Lee tournament with a 25-16, 25-23, 25-23 defeat of Coastal Georgia in Dayton and then edged Bethel (Ind.) 26-24, 25-23, 18-25, 21-25, 15-13. Chelsea Breaden had 11 kills and 11 digs and Kara Stamper and Carolyn Evans added nine and eight kills for the Lady Lions (6-0) against Coastal, when Taylor Fink had 34 assists and eight digs and Corrie Walker made 17 digs. Alyssa Keeve had nine kills and 11 digs for Coastal.
Fink had 53 assists and 17 digs and Breaden had 18 kills and 18 digs against Bethel, when Stamper made 16 kills and Ashley Ferris and Meghan Lowry added 12 and 11. Walker had 34 digs and Madison Akins had 25, while Rebecca Stroup and Evans added 13 and 11.
• At Nashville, Chelsea VanDyk smacked down 20 kills and Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 38 assists and six kills as Covenant beat Martin Methodist 25-13, 25-15, 17-25, 25-20. Estes Carlson and Cora Schroeder had 16 and 12 digs for the Lady Scots (3-1), and Carlson served four aces.
• At Birmingham, Sewanee improved to 7-0 for the season by beating Huntington 25-17, 25-13, 25-22 in the Birmingham-Southern Invitational. Jamie Sue Wilson, Caroline Montgomery and Diamond Stewart had seven kills each, Rachel Schuman had 14 assists and Jamie Kosman made 18 digs for the Tigers.
