The Baylor boys' cross country runners broke out their Superman shirts Saturday for the PowerAde Invitational high school meet. Although the individual Superman produced Herculean efforts by himself, it took a balanced effort for the same overall result the fictional superhero normally provided.

The Red Raiders finished with five of the top 13 finishers Saturday and claimed an 11-point victory over Farragut in the five-kilometer event at Moccasin Bend.

Bradley Central's Harold Smith won the individual race, finishing in 16 minutes, 35.03 seconds for his second win of the young season. Farragut's girls won the team title, with GPS finishing second.

Baylor's John Carlson and Alex Sumida had top-five finishes for the Red Raiders, while Jackson Goodwin, Anders Pokela and Luke Portera finished seventh, 12th and 13th, respectively.

"I thought we were fantastic," Baylor boys' coach Jan Gautier said. "We're very cohesive -- we don't have a Simon Holden this year -- but John Carlson's been consistent as our No. 1 runner, and all the guys did what they needed to do today."

Smith was pressed early on by Knoxville Catholic's Joe Bindner but was able to stretch his lead for a six-second victory.

"I was faster than last week, and that was important to me," Smith said. "The guy from Catholic really had me going, but I don't have a race for a few days, so I'll have time to recover.

"I just had to go big or go home."

GPS's Lucy Whitfield was in second place during the second lap of the girls' race but faltered late and finished fifth. She was the top area finisher, with teammate Tori Tomokane-Verville placing eighth.

Soddy-Daisy's Kacy Roberson finished 10th.

"I started too fast and died toward the end," Whitfield said. "I hope I can hold that pace later in the year.

"It was hot out today, but we have to prepare to run in the heat so we can run faster as the season goes along."
