Lady Vols win UTC tournament and other sports news

Tennessee went 4-0 in the Country Inns & Suites Invitational volleyball tournament hosted the last three days by UT-Chattanooga, but the host Mocs dropped to 0-7 for the season by losing 3-2 to UT-Martin and 3-1 to UNC Asheville on Saturday. Sarah Batterton had 13 kills, Briana Reid had 28 assists and 19 digs and Catherine Chason had 15 assists and 10 digs for UTC against UTM (6-2), and against UNCA Reid had 20 assists and Chason added 14 assists and 14 digs to go with Julimar Alvarado's 10 kills and Hannah Merkle's second straight 18-dig match. Reid made the all-tournament team headed by the Lady Vols' Ellen Mullins.

• Lee University gave Bryan College its first loss in seven volleyball matches this season, 29-27, 25-20, 25-17, in the last match for both in Lee's tournament Saturday in Cleveland. Paula Martins had 15 kills, 11 digs and three aces and Lauren Williams, Patricia Orozco and Erin Hill had 11, 10 and nine kills for the hosts, who got 41 assists from Camil Martinez and 15 digs from Libby Peigen. For Bryan, Kara Stamper made 10 kills and Carolyn Evans and Chelsea Breaden added nine and eight, while Corrie Walker had 19 digs and Taylor Fink set 34 assists. Stamper and Breaden had 15 and 14 kills, Fink had 43 assists and Walker had 21 digs in an earlier 25-19, 25-15, 25-20 defeat of Indiana Tech. Lee also went 3-1 in the tournament, earlier beating Coastal Georgia 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-21) as Martins had 17 kills and 12 digs and was in on seven blocks. Hill and Orozco had 14 and 12 kills, Martinez had 41 assists and Peigen and Sarah Davis had 22 and 14 digs.

• Chelsea VanDyk had 17 kills and Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 31 assists as the Covenant volleyball team beat Siena Heights 25-22, 14-25, 25-21, 25-18 in Trevecca Nazarene's tournament Saturday, but the host team dropped the Lady Scots to 3-3 with a 20-25, 25-9, 22-25, 25-19, 15-8 win. VanDyk had 15 kills and Kirkpatrick had 38 assists and 12 digs in the loss, when Cora Schroeder had 12 kills and 15 digs and Estes Carlson made 26 digs.

• The Sewanee volleyball team finally lost this season, 3-2 Saturday against Millsaps, but improved to 9-1 by defeating Victory. Friday, Sewanee beat Huntington 25-17, 25-13, 25-22 as Jamie Sue Wilson, Caroline Montgomery and Diamond Stewart had seven kills each, Rachel Schuman had 14 assists and Jamie Kosman made 18 digs. Stewart totaled 25 kills in the Saturday matches, when Wilson and Montgomery totaled 20 and 16 and Schuman and Walker Buxton had 37 and 33 assists.

Running

• UTC sophomores Teghan Henderson and Rebecca Greenwall finished first and third in 10:58.10 and 11:26:11 in the women's two-mile race Friday in the school's opening cross country meet on Moccasin Bend, while junior teammate Keeley Stewart was sixth and freshmen Maddison Melchionna and Katie Ray were 10th and 13th as the Lady Mocs won with 33 points. Austin Peay was second with 38, led by runner-up Xiamar Richards, and Middle Tennessee State was third with 50. UTC also won the men's 5k, with 26 points, followed by MTSU with 30 and Peay with 69. Although his wife, Amanda, hurt her ankle in a fall in the women's race, Mocs senior Lucas Cotter was the men's individual winner in 15:35.14, with sophomore teammates Paul Stuart and Trevor Janssen third and fifth in 15:44.36 and 15:55.89. MTSU's Shadrack Matelong was second in 15:43.26. Lee University won the women's open race with Shorter second and Auburn-Montgomery third, and Shorter was the men's winner with Bryan second, Lee third and Dalton State fourth.

Football

• Times Free Press sports writer David Paschall, now also a radio show co-host with sports editor Jay Greeson, will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium. Paschall will discuss Georgia's win Saturday against South Carolina and other SEC football topics. Attendance costs $10 with a hot meal, $4 without, and the public is invited.

Special Olympics

• The area Special Olympics bowling tournament for ages 30 and over will be held Monday at Holiday Bowl Brainerd with all 40 lanes in use and 170 participants. According to Area 4 director Judy Rogers, they will represent Exceptional Enterprises in Grundy County, Keithcare in Hixson, North River Special Friends, Open Arms Care in Ooltewah, Red Bank Independents, Rhea of Sunshine, Special Friends South and Omni Visions Adult Services, Orange Grove Center and Prolex Medical in Chattanooga.
