Cleveland's Bowles out of Wichita hospital after collapse

Wichita State University freshman basketball player D.J. Bowles from Cleveland, Tenn., collapsed during a workout last Tuesday evening and was hospitalized most of the time since then. He was released Sunday from Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis in Wichita but will be put through more tests to determine the reason for his collapse, according to a university news release Monday. Bowles played at Notre Dame High School as a freshman, at Cleveland High the next two seasons and at Oldsmar Christian in Tampa, Fla., as a senior.

Volleyball

• Covenant College sophomore middle Chelsea VanDyk was the USA South volleyball player of the week and teammate Estes Carlson was the defensive player of the week for their performances in four matches last week. VanDyk averaged 4.2 kills per set, totaling 67, and was in on 13 blocks. Carlson had 85 digs, 5.3 per set.

• The Cumberland University volleyball team defeated Sewanee 3-1 in the latter's Juhan Gymnasium on Monday. The set scores were 25-22, 25-17, 15-25, 25-23. Sheridan Jones had 11 kills and Rylee Butler added nine for Cumberland (5-3), while Kasi Wells and Ashton Perez set 24 and 16 assists and McCrea Barney made 16 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Caroline Montgomery had 13 kills, two block solos and five block assists for Sewanee (9-2), which got 17 assists from Walker Buxton and 10 digs from Jamie Kosman. Kayla Sewell also had two block solos with three block assists.

• Georgia Northwestern's freshman/sophomore volleyball team lost 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 to the Covenant junior varsity and carried four-year Crown College to the limit in losing 25-16, 13-25, 18-25, 25-12, 15-7 Monday night at the Rossville Athletic Complex. Freshman Victoria Sprouse from Ringgold led the Lady Bobcats (0-5).

Auto Racing

• Flintstone mechanic Jerry Wilson won the $1,500 top prize in the Super Pro class Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. Wilson won in a dragster powered by a 582-cubic-inch Chevrolet engine with a 5.68-second run on a 5.68 dial. Ryan Truitt of Atlanta was second in his 450 Buick-powered dragster with a 4.92 burst on a 4.90 dial. Another Flintstone resident, Eric Boyd, was third. Strip hall of famer L.C. Bigham from Tunnel Hill again won the Foot Brake class with an 8.34 run on an 8.33 dial in his 1972 Dodge Dart, and his son David was third behind Steven Holloway, who had a final 8.06 run on an 8.04 dial in his 1966 Plymouth. Jake Clayton of Ooltewah was the Junior Dragster winner with Mattie Keener of Dunlap second. Clayton's winning run was 7.90 seconds on a 7.91 dial.

Golf

• Lee University's Bernadette Little and Madison Alexander are tied with two West Florida golfers for first place with 73s in the 17-team women's division after the first day of the Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate tournament hosted by Carson-Newman at the Highlands Course in Sevierville. West Florida led the team scores with a 296, three better than Saint Leo, with Lee third at 301 and Limestone fourth at 308. Lee's Courtney Shelton is tied for 21st at 77, and Callie Kitchens and Sarah Robertson share 25th place with 78s. The Lee men were eighth Monday at 303 on the River Course, two shots out of fifth. Clayton State has an eight-stroke lead over second-place Queens of Charlotte with a 286. Lee's Matt Emery is tied for fifth at 70. Peyton Sliger opened with a 77, and fellow Flames Hunter Vest, Taylor Davis and Shea Sylvester shot 78s.

• With sophomore James Van Nice in a six-way tie for first place individually at 76, Covenant College leads the Piedmont Fall Invitational men's tournament at The Orchard Golf Club in Clarkesville, Ga., after shooting a 319 on Monday. Piedmont is one stroke back and Bob Jones is at 322. A Bob Jones golfer and two each from Piedmont and the Truett-McConnell junior varsity also shot 76s. Covenant got a 79 from Scott McKnight, an 81 from freshman Alan Craig and an 83 from Nick Blauw.

Softball

• The Lady Moc RBI Club will meet Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the press box at Jim Frost Stadium. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball coach Frank Reed will discuss plans for the fall season and introduce the Lady Mocs' new players for 2013-14. All area softball fans are invited.
