Ex-boyfriend charged with rape
Chattanooga police arrested a 23-year-old man Saturday morning after he reportedly forced himself on his ex-girlfriend after an argument. The victim said he visited her in an attempt to get back together with her.
According to a police affidavit, the victim went to a friend's house after encountering the ex-boyfriend near the Westside projects. She was talking to her friends when the suspect arrived and tried to get her to talk to him.
As the victim went upstairs to a friend's bedroom, the suspect followed and reportedly grabbed her by the neck area, forced her against the wall then engaged in oral and vaginal sex without her consent.
The suspect later told police the victim was making the accusations up, but then he confessed to giving oral sex and later admitted to vaginal sex earlier that night, saying "she gave it" to him.
The victim was taken to the sexual assault center for treatment. The suspect faces a rape charge. His bond was set at $40,000, and he will appear in court Oct. 1.
Charges added in traffic death
A Trenton, Ga., woman accused of hitting and killing a man who was riding a moped in December was booked into the Hamilton County Jail on Monday after more charges were added.
Betty Jean Mundy, 54, faces charges of reckless aggravated assault, failure to maintain lane, driving under the influence, vehicular homicide and following too closely. Mundy was indicted by a Hamilton County grand jury.
Mundy initially was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death shortly after 56-year-old David Bruce was killed in December 2012.
Bruce died at the scene in the 4400 block of St. Elmo Avenue. Pieces of his hair were found in Mundy's 2010 white Nissan Murano. Mundy did not stop after the accident.
She reportedly struck another vehicle at 3812 Tennessee Ave. before her vehicle came to a rest. She told police that she had taken Xanax and muscle relaxers before she struck Bruce.
As of Monday afternoon, Mundy had posted a $60,000 bond. Her next court date is set for Friday before Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Barry Steelman.
Man attempts entry with knife
Chattanooga police arrested Walter Henry, 31, after officers said he tried to break into a residence in the 1300 block of Dodson Avenue Sunday afternoon.
The victim, who lives at the residence, said he was sleeping when he heard a noise at his rear window. When he woke up to investigate, he saw Henry trying to get through a window screen.
Police detained Henry later that afternoon and found a modified butter knife and gloves, which they say could have been used to pry open the window screen and avoid leaving fingerprints.
Henry said he knew the victim and was going to visit him, but later said he was never at the house, according to a police affidavit. The victim said he did not know Henry.
Henry faces charges of aggravated burglary, vandalism and possession of burglary tools. His arrest also brought up eight active warrants, for probation violation stemming from previous aggravated burglary charges, which were served at the jail.
His bond was set at $75,000, and he will appear in court Sept. 24.
Two charged in burglaries
East Ridge police arrested two men on burglary charges after discovering stolen lawnmowers and landscaping equipment in a Superior Creek Lodge hotel room.
According to a news release, police located East Ridge residents Joseph Freeman and Jonathan Graham inside room 132 of the lodge, as well as lawnmowers, weed trimmers, hedge clippers, an electric wheelchair and other items. Several hours later, two East Ridge burglaries were reported in which victims provided lists of items identical to those found in room 132.
Police returned to the location, where the items were visible through the sliding glass door. After speaking with Graham's grandmother, the room's resident, they obtained consent from her to search the room.
The grandmother told police that Graham had brought the items to the apartment the night before.
