The Lee University golf teams had both medalists in the Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate tournaments hosted Monday and Tuesday at Sevierville by Carson-Newman University: Matt Emery from Franklin, Tenn., and Chattanooga's Baylor School at 141 in the 18-team men's field and Bernardette Little from Nova Scotia at 142 in the 17-team women's competition. The Lady Flames finished second to Saint Leo while the Flames made a huge jump from Monday to a tie for third with a Tuesday-best aggregate 288. Hunter Vest tied for 12th at 147 with a 69 in the men's event, and Taylor Davis and Shea Sylvester shot 74s for 152 totals. Clayton State won at 578 with Queens of Charlotte second at 585 and Lee and North Georgia at 591. Little closed with a 142 as the Lady Flames finished four strokes behind Saint Leo's 591, and Courtney Shelton tied for 10th with a 150 after a second-round 73. Callie Kitchens, Madison Alexander and Sarah Robertson wound up at 153, 154 and 155, good for ties for 17th, 19th and 21st. Little won her medal by two strokes, Emery by one.

• Led by medalist James Van Nice with a two-day 151, the Covenant College men's golf team won the Piedmont Fall Invitational at Orchard Golf & Country Club in Clarkesville, Ga., by 20 strokes over second-place Piedmont. The Scots led by only one after Monday's round but improved 13 shots to 306 on Tuesday with Scott McKnight tying for third individually at 156, Alan Craig finishing eighth at 159 and Cameron Lewis tying for ninth at 160. Van Nice won by four strokes.

Volleyball

• Belmont University defeated the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team 3-0 Tuesday night in Nashville, leaving the Mocs 0-8 for the season. The set scores were 25-16, 25-16, 25-18, and Hannah Miranda had 30 assists and Jessica Vestal and Scarlet Gable had 11 and nine kills for Belmont (3-6). Julimar Alvarado and Briana Reid led UTC with seven had six kills, while Anne Bachmann had 14 assists and matched Catherine Chason's 10 digs.

• Bryan College's Taylor Fink was the setter and player of the week in Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball for last week, and teammate Corrie Walker was the libero of the week. The Lady Lions opened league play Tuesday night with a 3-0 win at Reinhardt, as Fink had 28 assists, Walker made 16 digs and Kara Stamper made 12 kills. Madison Akins served three aces for Bryan (8-1) in the 25-10, 25-18, 26-24 victory. Denise De Vine had 10 kills for Reinhardt (3-2, 2-2). Fink had 164 assists in four matches last weekend (11.7 per set), including 53 in one contest, and also totaled 43 digs. Walker had 91 digs, averaging 6.4 per set.

• Tennessee Temple lost 3-1 in volleyball Tuesday against Cumberland University. The set scores were 25-23, 25-23, 9-25, 25-10. Kaylee Ginnings had 32 assists and Victoria Smith had 12 kills and three block solos for TTU, while Lydia Vick had 10 kills and 13 digs and Shatoya Medford added nine kills.

• Carson-Newman lost 3-2 in its volleyball match against undefeated Tusculum (20-25, 25-27, 25-18, 25-13, 15-9) on Tuesday, but the Lady Eagles' Rachel Harper from Boyd-Buchanan School and Kristen Pickett from Cleveland High posted match highs of 23 kills for Harper and 54 assists for Pickett. Harper also had 18 digs for the Lady Eagles (2-2), and Pickett had eight plus two block solos.

Soccer

• Bryan junior goalkeeper Josh Oldroyd was named the AAC men's soccer defensive player of the week after his work in two wins last week, including a shutout of a Martin Methodist team receiving votes in the NAIA poll. The other was an AAC defeat of St. Andrews.

• For the first time in Nathan Pifer's five years as coach of his alma mater, Covenant College beat Berry College in men's soccer Tuesday. "The last two years we've got close but lost in overtime," Pifer said after the visiting Scots' 2-1 win lifted them to 3-1-1 for the season. "This is a big win. It's a big confidence booster for us." Covenant's Joel Friesen broke a scoreless tie a minute into the second half from a Noah Wiersema assist, but Christian Zapata equalized for the Vikings (2-2-1) three minutes later. David Huertas' header from an Ian Meredith cross off a corner kick put the Scots back ahead in the 75th minute. They had a 16-12 edge in shots.
