New Eagle Scouts

• Randall Smith of Troop 2 at St. Elmo Presbyterian Church earned his Eagle Scout award during a campfire ceremony held recently at Hidden Hollow Campground.

The son of Art and Janelle Smith of Chickamauga, Ga., is a graduate of Gordon Lee High School and attends Mississippi College, where he received a football/academic scholarship.

For the community service project required of all Eagle Scouts, he cleared and landscaped a portion of the property at Fort Oglethorpe City Hall.

• Daniel Rhodes of Troop 82 earned his Eagle Scout award during a Court of Honor held at East Brainerd Church of Christ.

The son of Robbie and Kristi Rhodes is a senior at Boyd Buchanan High School, where he is a member of the band and Robotics Club.

For his community service project, he cut a new quarter-mile nature trail at Audubon Acres called "The Karst Trail."

Lee students perform in Wyoming

Nine Lee University students and alumni, along with Lee music professor James Frost, recently appeared in the historical theater musical, "South Pass," in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Written by the Rev. Mike Atkins, the musical is about a trapper, Jedediah Smith, who explored the Jackson Hole area and discovered "South Pass," which opened the way for the Oregon Trail and westward migration.

The Lee students spent much of their summer working with director Earl Grove, fight coordinator Ted Sharron, and choreographer Larrisa Fasthorse. Cast members included Travis Harrison, Rachel Cooke, Tyler Steele, Tyler Plemons, Rachel Greene, Nicholas Branson, Danielle Cogan, Maddie Taylor and Justin Colon.

Local businesses receive Ronald McDonald House awards

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Chattanooga and its Ronald McDonald Care Mobile program were recipients of the Hearts and Hands Award and a $10,000 grant during the Ronald McDonald House Charities International Conference held in Chicago.

The award recognizes programs with the most impact developed by local RMHC chapters in response to critical needs of children in their communities. The Care Mobile began as a mobile dental program and was re-engineered to a mobile, school-based medical program following the loss of TennCare funding for dental care. The Care Mobile operates in Bradley County, Cleveland City and Polk County school systems.

The Hearts and Hands Award recognized the collaboration between RMHC, T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital at Erlanger, SkyRidge Medical Center, Bradley County Schools and the support of the Bradley Memorial Health Endowment Fund administered by United Way of Bradley County.

Additionally, La-Z-Boy was presented the Outstanding Stewardship Award during the conference. The award recognizes corporations for supporting the mission of the charity.

La-Z-Boy began its support of RMHC in 2008 with a donation of furniture to chapters in the United States and Canada. Since then, the company has extended its donations to Australia, New Zealand and Asia Pacific, with the gift of more than 5,000 pieces of furniture to date.
