Friday, Sept. 20

East Hamilton (4-0, 1-0) at Ooltewah (3-1, 1-0)

An early peek: The neighbor teams have played only twice and Ooltewah won each -- 31-28 last year and 45-13 in 2011. The Hurricanes, whose only losses last year were to the Owls and then Giles County in the second round of the playoffs, are 4-0 for the first time in school history. They also have moved from Class 4A to Class 5A, from District 6-AA to 5-AAA. Former Ooltewah coach Ted Gatewood is the only coach East Hamilton has had. Mac Bryant is in his first season coaching the Owls. Both teams possess speedy athletes and quality passing games with quarterbacks Brody Binder (Ooltewah) and Hunter Moore. The two have three of the area's top four single-game passing performances this year.

McMinn Central (1-3, 0-1) at Polk County (2-1, 0-0)

An early peek: The host Wildcats ought to be primed and ready after getting upset last week by East Ridge. Each team has a big offensive gun -- the Chargers' fleet Denzell Boyd and Polk's bullish Zach Miller. It might come down to which defense performs best and/or which offense is better able to control the ball and the clock. Each team averages less than 10 passes per game, and both coaches -- Central's Josh Goodin and Polk's Derrick Davis -- preach old-school, physical styles. Polk has run off four straight wins in the series since a 16-0 loss in 2008.

East Ridge (2-2, 1-0) at Brainerd (0-4, 0-1)

An early peek: The visiting Pioneers have come alive with back-to-back wins against Walker Valley and Polk County. Both were considered upsets. Now they go across I-24 on Moore Road to play the winless Panthers, who already are through the meat of their schedule -- Ooltewah, Ensworth, Red Bank and, last week, Baylor. New Panthers coach Brian Gwyn has apparently settled on Sam Caffey at quarterback, and the senior had a 300-yard passing game two weeks ago. East Ridge finally has a few healthy bodies with whom to surround and enhance the passing and throwing of quarterback Jo Jo Tillery.

Walker Valley (3-1, 0-1) at Bradley Central (2-1, 0-0)

An early peek: The visiting Mustangs returned to the win column last Friday with a victory over former District 5-AAA rival Rhea County, while Bradley coach Damon Floyd had to sweat bullets before his club rallied for a 14-13 win over Hixson. Passing is the key game this year at Bradley behind Brett Standifer and a quality group of receivers, while Walker Valley coach Glen Ryan prefers a ground-and-pound offensive attack. The Mustangs' offense has pretty much been by committee with no one player grabbing the bulk of the headlines. The Bears have won eight straight in the series, including the 1-9 season of 2005.
