Wesleyan sweeps soccer matches and other sports news

The Tennessee Wesleyan soccer teams swept visiting St. Andrews in Appalachian Athletic Conference play Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs (2-4, 1-0) winning 2-0 on goals by Daelyn Swafford and Madelyn Thomas and the Bulldogs (3-3, 2-0) prevailing 5-3 as Nduka Kemjika scored twice and added assists for Brent Lesnick and Ryan Ejezie. Ejezie also had two goals, and Ben Wilks was credited with three assists.

• The Bryan College men's soccer team lost for the first time in five matches this season Saturday night, 4-1 at Rio Grande in Ohio. Rio Grande (4-1) won on Heitor de Melo's second goal of the game at 83:29. Zach McCown and Khankhalifa Kanne scored for Bryan, the latter at 80:18 on Josh Smotherman's assist.

• A.C. Strawbridge and Sophie Gianis scored in the first half and Bethany Logan and Ruth Taylor sandwiched second-half scores around one by Tennessee Temple's Kansas Carpenter as Covenant's Lady Scots won their soccer matchup Saturday, 4-1. Jessica Rowe, JoJo Brauer and Kaitlyn Winking had assists for Covenant (2-4), which had margins of 20-5 in shots and 8-2 in corners. Lyndi Dodd made seven saves for TTU (2-4).

• The Sewanee men's soccer team notched its first win of the season Saturday, 1-0 over LaGrange at Birmingham-Southern. Walker Ueland scored from an assist by fellow senior Brian Maloney half a minute into the second half, and Conrad Bandoroff made five saves in the shutout for the Tigers (1-3-2).

• Sewanee also won in women's soccer, 2-0 against East Texas Baptist at Clinton, Miss., as Tyler Edell scored from a Jamie Samociuk assist at 36:33 and Shelby Meckstroth netted the seventh goal of her freshman season at 6:01 from a Baker Walls assist. Olivia Glascoe made five saves for the Tigers (4-1-1), who were outshot 12-8.

Volleyball

• Payton Tipton's team got the better of former Cleveland High School teammate Kristen Pickett's as King College won 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-14 over Carson-Newman in King's volleyball tournament Friday. Tipton had 10 digs after making 16 in a 3-0 defeat of Southern Wesleyan. Pickett had 32 assists and nine digs and Boyd-Buchanan graduate Rachel Harper had 13 kills and 12 digs in CNU's loss to King. The Lady Eagles (3-3) earlier beat Trevecca Nazarene 3-2 with Harper registering 18 kills and 15 digs and PIckett setting 42 assists. Saturday, Tipton had 24 digs in a 3-0 King win over UVA-Wise and Harper had 15 kills and seven digs and Pickett contributed 37 assists and eight digs in CNU's 3-1 defeat of North Greenville.

• Bryan College improved to 12-1 in volleyball with 3-0 wins Saturday against St. Andrews and Emmanuel. Chelsea Breaden and Kara Stamper had 14 and 12 kills in the 25-13, 25-14, 25-10 AAC victory, while Taylor Fink had 32 assists and Corrie Walker had five aces and 10 digs. Fink had 36 assists and Walker made 18 digs in the 25-21, 25-11, 25-21 defeat of Emmanuel, when Stamper and Breaden had nine kills each and Carolyn Evans and Ashley Ferris added seven apiece. Meanwhile, Tennessee Wesleyan (5-7, 2-2) lost an AAC match to Columbia, 25-17, 25-19, 16-25, 25-20.

• Victoria Smith had 10 kills and Kaylee Ginnings had 27 assists as Tennessee Temple beat Trinity College 25-12, 25-12, 25-15 in volleyball Saturday at Jacksonville, Fla. Jade Mast served seven aces and Shatoya Medford made three solo blocks for Temple.

• Holly Mount had seven kills and Rachel McGill set 17 assists as two-year program Georgia Northwestern beat four-year school Hiwassee 25-13, 25-14, 25-17 in volleyball Friday night at the Rossville Athletic Complex. Layna Jenkins served five aces and Victoria Sprouse and McGill added four each in the win.

Running

• Lee and Sewanee finished eighth and ninth out of 13 non-Division I men's cross country teams in Vanderbilt's Commodore Classic meet Saturday morning, and Lee was ninth with Sewanee 10th in the women's. Lee's Cayce Bryan and Ashley Matthews were 15th and 26th individually and Sewanee's Amy Lee was 28th in the women's 5k. Led by Camden Perez, five Lee guys were 33rd to 44th in the 8k, while the Tigers' Jason Grimes was 40th.

• Covenant's Stephen Dillon was fourth in 29:57.1 for 8 kilometers and teammates Matt Gorter, Zach Smith, Jack Williams and Si Mitchell were sixth, ninth, 11th and 13th in the University of North Georgia Invitational cross country meet Saturday at Oakwood, Ga. The Scots were second to Truett-McConnell, which had the top three finishers plus seventh and eighth. The Lady Scots were third out of six teams, led by Beth Burgess in sixth individually and Esther Anderson and Anna Hankal in 11th and 12th.

General

• Dr. Steve Angle, the new UTC chancellor, will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium. Attendance costs $10 with a hot meal, $4 without, and the public is invited.
