Mocs' running back Keon Williams is SoCon pick again

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior running back Keon Williams is the Southern Conference offensive player of the week for the second week in a row. The former Red Bank High School standout earned the distinction Monday with his performance Saturday in UTC's 42-10 rout of Austin Peay at Finley Stadium. Williams rushed for 106 yards and a career-best three touchdowns on just 11 carries. A week earlier, in a 42-14 win at Georgia State, he ran for a career-high 147 yards and a touchdown on 20 attempts. Williams is averaging 97.7 yards per game and 7.5 yards per carry. He shares the SoCon lead in touchdowns (four) with Mocs tight end Faysal Shafaat and Samford running back Fabian Truss.

Golf

• The UTC women's golf team is in fourth place out of 13 teams after two rounds Monday of the Cardinal Cup hosted by the University of Louisville in Simpsonville, Ky. Louisville's A and B teams are first and third at 567 and 584 with Kansas second at 581, and the Mocs are at 594, eight ahead of fifth-place Cincinnati, with 18 holes to play. UTC senior Jordan Britt is tied for fifth individually at even-par 144 after a second-round 69, and Agathe Sauzon and Emily McLennan are tied for 11th and 20th at 147 and 149. Isabella Loza shares 33rd place at 154. "Jordan played an awesome round in the afternoon," coach Colette Murray said in a UTC release. "It's a great way to start her senior year. We need our four and five positions to step up tomorrow."

• Led by a 70 from Davis Bunn, the UTC men's golf team trimmed eight shots off its Sunday total and moved up a spot to 12th Monday in the 15-team Golfweek Conference Challenge in Burlington, Iowa. The Mos' aggregate 297 has them at 602, seven shots out of 10th. Oklahoma leads at 568 by 13 shots over second-place Houston. UTC's Brooks Thomas is tied for 25th at 147 with Bunn tied for 50th at 151 and Benni Weilguni, Ewan Scott and Chris Robb also in the top 60 at 153, 155 and 155.

• Lee University leads the Coastal Georgia Fall Invitational men's golf tournament with one round to go at St. Simons Island. The Flames shot 572 (285-287) for a four-shot lead over the host team, as Taylor Davis, Shea Sylvester and Hunter Vest each had a 70 for 36-hole totals of 142, 143 and 145, and Matt Emery and Peyton Sliger shot 147s.

• Sewanee finished 16th at 623 in the Rhodes College Men's Fall Classic golf tournament, led by Paul Gosiger at 154 and Timothy Walker and Harry McMurrey at 155 and 157. Rhodes won with a 587.

Tennis

• Chattanooga's Wesley Cash opened singles play in the USTA Men 55 Grass Court Nationals at Forest Hills, N.Y., with a 6-1, 6-1 round-of-64 win Monday over Michael Boutillette of Somerset, N.J. Cash is one of the No. 5 seeds in singles and is seeded No. 1 with Michael Tammen of Portland, Ore., in doubles, which starts today. The duo already won the 55s indoor nationals this year.

Soccer

• Sewanee freshman goalkeeper Holden Foster was the Southern Athletic Association men's soccer defensive player of the week after helping the Tigers post two 1-0 wins over the weekend in Birmingham, over LaGrange and LeTourneau. Foster totaled 12 saves in his team's first two victories of the season.

• Maryville College freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Kennedy from Ooltewah High School was the USA South Athletic Conference women's soccer rookie of the week after scoring three goals in the Lady Scots' 8-1 win over Oglethorpe.

• Tennessee Temple lost 9-2 to Spring Hill (5-1) in women's soccer Monday in Mobile, Ala. Freshman Kansas Carpenter assisted on a score by Kalina Hyde 33:28 into the match and scored herself 13 minutes into the second half to cut Spring Hill's lead to 4-2. Temple (2-5) was outshot 34-14 and got 10 saves from Lyndi Dodd and four from Tori Ralston.

Running

• Covenant College junior Beth Burgess was the USA South women's cross country runner of the week after finishing sixth out of 58 runners in the North Georgia Invitational meet this past weekend. She helped the Lady Scots finish third in the 5k race.

Volleyball

• Tennessee Temple University defeated Georgia Northwestern 25-12, 25-13, 25-22 in volleyball Monday evening, as Kaylee Ginnings had 19 assists and Kiara Govan added 14 and Natasha Petrillo had 11 kills with Trinity Garmon and Shatoya Medford adding seven each. In a weekend 25-15, 25-12, 25-13 win over Trinity Baptist in Jacksonville, Fla., Govan had 25 assists, Garmon recorded 10 kills and Jade Mast had 10 digs and four aces.
